How many types are state quarters?

I always wanted one of each type of coin mined by the US. I wanted proof where possible, except gold in mint state.

Then along came the Registry sets. So I looked at what I thought the different types were and what PCGS thought the different type are. So I bought a few extra Ikes, which I wouldn't have bought in the first place (yes I bought a coin I wouldn't have otherwise) and the 3'rd SLQ. I am happy with the 3'rd SLQ and agree that is a seperate type I want to collect regardless of what PCGS says.

So would I collect each state quarter or just one coin as an example of "State Quarters"? I would prefer to collect just one for now. But I guess eventually I would want one from each state. Each one is a unique design minted for circulation.

I never played in the "Modern" type set because of the commems and bullion. My mind says proof coins are fine even though they weren't meant for circulation because the designs did circulate. However commems and bullion designs were never meant to circulate. Still I don't understand why this was changed?

  • Carl,

Theoretically, since the design changed for each state quarter, each quarter is its own type. However, PCGS recognized that dominating a set with basically the same coin would not be feasible when they did the previous 1959-present set. Each bullion denomination $5 through $100 of the gold and platinum would also be a unique type. PCGS allowed you to pick the denomination you wanted to use. The same with the modern commem requirement. Instead of asking for one of each design, you picked one of each denomination.
