Other grading companies?

I am just getting back into cards after 15 yrs! I have been looking at ebay to buy cards and there are several other different grading companies doing cards now, what is the difference of these companies? Is there any that lack creditability and I should avoid?

Thanks for any help and advice!

  • SGC and PSA are the best by far! Avoid everthing else!

  • BVG/BGS, PSA and SGC are fine. Stay away from all others, imo.

SGC and PSA. Anything else is a crapshoot, and should be avoided.

BGS/BVG (not BCCG), PSA, and SGC are the top 3.

    KSA is good for hockey.

GAI has lost most of their luster.

    Pro will probably be altered/trimmed.

GEM is likely to be unaltered but will be very overgraded.

Hi, hello, how are ya? image

As noted only PSA or SGC. Both are top notch companies. PSA if you are concerned about resale. The more expensive vintage cards do ok in SGC but minor stars and commons will almost have to be given away. SGC has a great reputation for quality grading and service. They are a little more forgiving on poor centering. PSA has qualifiers on cards that achieve a certain grade but have a particular problem that would downgrade it. If I had to purchase a card unseen PSA would be the way to go.

    Agree with most here.
Only go with sgc or psa.
and to double brick's comment...sgc is more forgiving on centering so watch out for that....an sgc 88 or 92 could get you a psa off center qualifier if you ever tried to crossover.

Avoid nearly all of the others...even if the cost seems to be 1/5 of what a psa card would go for. :

  • Holy crap, there are that many grading companies? Wow, it looked like everyone tried to get in the mix!

Thanks for the warm welcome and the advice!

Didnt Mr. Mint say something in his book about avoiding graded cards????? Is that guy still around?

I noticed that you guys were checking the status of your submissions, when do they let you know what you got? I have been checking everyday and at the bottom it says error- no orders found. Is there something else I need to do?

    Thanks again guys!!!!!

Beckett is ok, but be aware they have a service called BCCG which I would avoid.

BVG and BGS are decent too, trimmed, sheet cut cards have been known to make it into those holders though.

Generally though, PSA ancd SGC are the top tier.

    Welcome btw.

PSA is probably your best bet if your going for a wide spectrum and wish to stay consistent.

SGC is very solid in pre-war material and often outsells PSA in that genre.

BGS is pretty sturdy in the modern market.

All-in-all, you should be alright if you stick to those that do their respective markets right.

That being said, for the overall consistency and resale over the full range of issues from 1880-2009, I would go with PSA and SGC leaving BGS for anything post 1985 (although I have no use for anything from BGS) and avoiding SGC on modern material. PSA is your best bet for 1940 to present. SGC is pretty much on par with PSA from 1880-1940. I wouldn't touch a BGS (BVG) card unless it were the newer Chromes and I'd run for the hills on almost anything in a high grade BVG holder.

If the card isn't very expensive, GAI and the original SCD (red oval on flip) can be worthwhile. Approach either of these with caution, however.
