Who do you think will be in the Football HOF Class of 2010?

If I am not mistaken, they typically announce these the week before the Super Bowl. They are only at the semi-finalist stage right now but here is the list:

Cliff Branch
Tim Brown
Cris Carter
Don Coryell
Roger Craig
Terrell Davis
Dermontti Dawson
Richard Dent
Chris Doleman
Kevin Greene
Russ Grimm
Ray Guy
Charles Haley
Lester Hayes
Rickey Jackson
Cortez Kennedy
Art Modell
John Randle
Andre Reed
Jerry Rice
Shannon Sharpe
Emmitt Smith
Paul Tagliabue
Steve Tasker
Aeneas Williams

Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith are slam dunks. I would love to see Ricky Jackson get in - 15 years, 6 Pro Bowls, 128 sacks, 8 INTs, 1 safety. He was a force for the on the Saints. If they only had an offense they could have been contenders! I also would like to see Kevin Greene get in. He had a great career - 15 years, 5 Pro Bowls, 160 sacks, 5 INTs ( 1 for a TD), 3 safeties, and 2 fumble recoveries for TDs. I am guessing Tagliabue will also get in this year. Who else do you think will get the other slots this year?

My guesses based upon how the voting typically goes (not necessarily the players I would select):

    Russ Grimm
    Ray Guy
    Art Modell
    Jerry Rice
    Emmitt Smith

Senior: Dick LeBeau (Floyd Little, the other Senior Nominee, will not be elected)

Paul Tagliabue will not get in until the CBA is settled with the NFLPA. He's being punished for leaving this walk-away loophole in the last CBA. I would like to think that Carter/Sharpe/Dent would be possibilities, but I think Modell will steal Sharpe's spot. It seems only natural for Smith and Rice to go in as the only players representing their position. Also, it's about time that a true punter gets in and that should be Ray Guy. With Kuchenburg out of the picture, Grimm is the best lineman left and with some of the guys coming into the fray in the upcoming years, this may be his last shot...
  • Emmitt Smith
    Jerry Rice
    Cris Carter
    Richard Dent
    Dermontti Dawson

I would really like to see John Randle make it....but usually in these discussions it appears I am his only fan.

What about Charles Haley? Recking crew on 2 dynasties (late 80's 49ers and 90's Cowboys) 5 time pro bowler and only player to win 5 Super Bowls.

Agreed about Haley, I also think Tim Brown should get some consideration. My 5th choice is Shannon Sharpe.

I don't know the stats of FB players as well as baseball. Many of you guys know a LOT more about FB than I do, but I think the following guys have a great argument for induction. It's amazing a true punter is not in the HOF ... Don't you think that if you are THE BEST at your position (or one of the all-time best) that you should be a LOCK in ANY Hall Of Fame?

    Richard Dent
    Russ Grimm
    Ray Guy
    Jerry Rice
    Emmitt Smith
    Paul Tagliabue

  • Isn't there a limit to how many players get in each year? Thought it was dependent on the senior(s) that get voted in. That said wouldlike to see: Emmitt,Rice,Dawson and Guy. It's a great class and really anyone could make it.

    Was expanded to 7...
    From a Feb 05 08 article

This was the third straight year that the voters have elected six players, although they apparently could not get the required 80 percent votes for one more player to make it the new maximum of seven. That's too bad because there are too many worthy candidates and the list will only grow over the next few years.

Besides the obvious choices, I think Dent is a lock to get in. The HOF is has 140 offensive players and only 65 defensive players. I've read that the HOF voters are trying to balance out the numbers since it does seem unfair that there are such few defensive players in compared to the offense.

A maximum of 7 people can be enshrined in any one year. This is with the 2 senior nominees. In other words, a maximum of 5 can be inducted from the regular list.

Here's a link to the original thread on the 2010 FB HOF Inductions.

  • I agree with the Rickey Jackson comment. I remember the Saints trading Chuck Muncie to the Chargers and this was the pick we got. I was SO upset we traded Muncie, but when we got Rickey I was SO happy. He had played for Pitt in the Gator Bowl against South Carolina and I was watching because I knew the Saints would pick George Rogers with the first pick. Rickey DOMINATED that game, and that was with Hugh Green in the lineup. I can only dream what the Saints could have done if they had used that first pick on Lawrence Taylor and then picked Rickey Jackson in the second round.

Anyway, while Rickey played on a lot of mediocre/pretty good teams, he was always a class guy and a great player. I'm glad he finally did get his Super Bowl ring, even if it was with the 49ers.
