Picked up a NFL ticket stub that I've always wanted...30th Anniversary Bump 12/8/80

Monday Night Football December 8, 1980 Dolphins vs Patriots...I remember watching this game (I was 14 years old). This was the night that John Lennon was shot. Howard Cosell broke the news just before the game ended.

I've been looking for this one for a couple years. I'll post a photo when I get it.

  • I was born in '74 so I do not remember that night. Here is another person though that shares a close experience with you....or somewhat close.

"On the night of December 8, 1980, I had one of those "Kennedy assassination" moments (you know, where you were and what you were doing when you heard the news) like most other people did. I was 18 at the time, and was watching the New England Patriots-Miami Dolphins Monday night football game. It got kind of dull early in the third quarter, so I turned it off and put the radio on. The first thing I heard on WNEW-FM 102.7, a NYC rock station at the time, was "More on the John Lennon shooting as details become available." What???"

  • Here's another one...

"Twenty nine years ago tonight I was at home, safe in my tiny triplex, watching Monday Night Football, lounging on a very ugly, distastefully yellow and brown recliner, recently found near the dumpster at the local Jack in the Box where my girlfriend worked."

  • And another....

"On that night, I was in the living room of my home in Robinson, Illinois, watching the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots in a boring Monday Night Football game, when Howard Cosell broke away from the action — and broke my heart."

that's a nice piece. I remember watching the game when I was a kid too.

I have the following day's Worcester (Mass.) Telegram around here somewhere. Has the picture of Chapman getting an autograph from him on it

On a side note, you could probably send that to Kevin Burge and get it signed by Lennon

  • So the Dolphins didn't play the Jets at home that season? Did the NFL not let the divisions play a home-away series every year?

Also, was Game 1 a preseason game, with Game 2 - 9 the regular season?

I was at a Springsteen concert in Philadelphia and Bruce must've found out between the main set and the encores because he seemed really down when he came back onstage. It wasn't until we left the arena and got to my car and turned on the radio that we found out about Lennon. The next night, Bruce opened the show saying something about Lennon's death and noting that none of us would be here if not for Lennon and the Beatles. He then went on to play one of his more inspired shows of the tour.

I've still got my stubs from those two nights. Great reminders, like your stub, of a sobering night when the music was taken from us.

You're correct - good eye. It looks like I'm missing Game 10 - which was December 20, 1980 vs the Jets. This was the **wierd** game that was televised without play-by-play or color comentary - just the sounds from the stadium.

Games 1 & 2 (vs. Lions & Vikings) were August preseason games.

I remember both games as I wasn't a kid. When the NFL channel started broadcasting games their first year with Bryant Gumble I was hoping they would go back to the silent game format. Sadly they didn't and I just turned the sound off. image

I remeber my father watching the game without play-by-play. The old man though something was wrong with the TV and kept smacking the side of it.

Just heard audio from a commercial break where Cosell wasn't sure about breaking the news live on air. Gifford and Tarkenton were in agreement that it had to be done.

My wife and i went to the Strawberry fields in NY a few years ago. i have a nice framed picture of the mosiac in our basement. i still have a New York Times from 30 years ago with the front page saying "John Lennon shot dead." That is another thing we collect...newspapers from historic events. We also have the paper from whrn the Titanic sank in a frame in our basement as well. We got that from her great aunt who never threw a paper away...ever.
