<< <i>Billy Martin right? >>
I think so. And Billy Martin show a cow not a bat. Read Mantles book, The Mick....it's in there.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
April 16, 1987. Billy Martin tells a story to David Letterman on television. It seems Billy, Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford went hunting near the Oklahoma-Texas border. Mickey, of course, was an old country boy while Whitey and Billy were city kids.
Mickey drove to a nearby farm and walked up to the house to ask the farmer for permission to hunt on his land. The farmer agreed, but asked Mickey to put down an old mule that had gone blind.
Mickey went back to the car and told Whitey and Billy that the farmer had refused permission, so in revenge he was going to shoot the farmer’s mule. He walked off and did that. On the way back to the car, he heard two more shots. Thinking that the city boys might have hurt themselves he started to run. When he got there he Billy crowed, “I got two of the b-----d’s cows!” Billy said Mickey always told this story to explain why people put up with Martin’s temper and erratic behavior, “Billy was always on your side.”

<< <i>Here is the story for those that haven't read it...
