Down Goes Ripken ! UPDATE DEC. 2010

I thought I'd share a pretty cool photo....It's a "pre-streak" original UPI wire photo dated 05/03/82 when Cal Ripken Jr. was hit on the head with a fast ball from Seattle's Mike Moore, which cracked his batting helmet and sent Cal to the ground (and out of the game).....I had Cal sign it last week and he told me the story that he was leaning over the plate looking for a breaking pitch and got the "high hard one" instead....

Cal liked it so much, he made a copy of it for his own collection prior to him signing it with a neat/unique inscription...

Enjoy!

He always looks forward (so he says anyway) to the things I bring him to sign because of their uniqueness......

I am not a Ripken fan, in fact, as a Yankees fan I pretty much despised him, but of course respect him and the way he played the game. With that being said, I look forward to every post that Bill makes from his collection. Absolutely amazing stuff that just! Keep the pictures coming!

I meant to state this earlier, but I think one of the reasons he liked this photo so much is if you notice, his dad (Cal Sr.) was one of the first people to come to his aid....

Just thought I'd follow up on this story one year later.....A couple months ago, I picked up a AP Laserphoto off eBay from the next day showing Cal holding the cracked helmet....Spent some time with Jr. today and asked him to sign this photo for me with whatever inscription he chose and this is the result:

  • I noticed how you said "spent some time with" Ripken and wondered if that meant you know him and get stuff signed when you see him or if you go to many signings (or both)? It's nice to see a player who appreciates the unique items of theirs.

Cal Ripken is one of the most iconic players of all time. He is special to baseball history and those two pieces are so unique and one of a kind that any sports bar can readily use them. Collectors would pursue such items too.

This is another one of those AP Laser Photos dated 08/13/88 which is the ACTUAL day that my oldest son was born. I had Billy sign this to him the other day and this will be a gift for my son tomorrow (we'll get it framed)...
