I just got back from a trip to Detroit to see friends and the economic disaster is everywhere. When I lived there the city always went through cycles, but I think this one is a permanent change down.
With that, I can't see how the Tigers can keep Miggy. The team won't be competitive for a few years and there is no need to pay a superstar salary on the 2010 team.
I think the Red Sox will make an offer to pick him up. 2010 is the last year of Ortiz's contract, so the Sox will need a new power bat. Plus he can be the next Manny, without the dreads or the PEDs (unless the PED is a cheeseburger).

I like him and I like the Tigers.
It would be good for the city and the team, if he sticks around.
Not sure how to pay for him, though.

On March 22, 2008 Cabrera reached an agreement with the Tigers on an eight-year, $153.3 million contract extension. At the time, the deal was the fourth-largest in baseball history, behind those signed by Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, and Manny Ramirez.[10] The deal is also the largest in Tigers history, surpassing the five-year, $75 million contract signed by Magglio Ordóñez in 2005. Cabrera earned $11.3 million in 2008, and will receive an average of $19 million per year through 2015.
Personal life
Cabrera is both a Catholic and a practitioner of Santería. He became a babalao in the 2006 offseason.[20] His wife is named Rosangel, and they have a daughter. Cabrera and his family currently live in Birmingham, Michigan.[21]
Early morning on October 3, 2009, police were called to the Cabreras' home and took Cabrera in for questioning. Cabrera had come home at 6:00am, after a night of drinking at the nearby Townsend Hotel, and got in an argument with his wife. He was seen later that day at a game at Comerica Park, with scratches on his face. Cabrera told reporters that the scratches came from his dog and refused to discuss the matter further.[22] It was later reported he had a blood alcohol level of .26, three times the legal limit, when tested at the police station. Dave Dombrowski, the general manager of the Tigers, picked him up from the police station around 7:30am—eleven and a half hours before that evening's game in which he went 0–4 with one strikeout and six runners left on base against the Chicago White Sox.[23]
Television station WXYZ had obtained a police report from an alleged incident the preceding August, in which Cabrera was involved in a verbal altercation with diners at a restaurant inside the Townsend.[24] Witnesses say Cabrera threatened to fight the group outside and indicated that he had a gun. Restaurant employees asked Cabrera to leave and police were called. There was no weapon in Cabrera's vehicle and Cabrera told team officials he did not own one. Cabrera then told team officials he had been dealing with personal issues and got upset, and the diners ended up dropping the matter.[25]

I watched him all thru his rookie year here in FLA. He's really a monster hitter! Chance, IMO to become a HOFer, if he can stay healthy for a dozen years (and stay off steriods, as he really looked like he "bulked-up" these past couple of years!).
Who else? Yankees! LOL!

I agree but I think he bulked out and not up. Neither roids or HGH make you suddenly develop a beer belly or donkey butt (not that I have paid attention to his butt).
Roar, I love your avatar and I'm sure we have the very same passion for our Tigers. But I take great exception to that statement. October is where you earn your money. There is nothing Cabrera can do in the rest of his career for the Tigers to make up for what he did the last weekend of 2009. Nothing. The financial impact alone of the Tigers not making the playoffs assures that, not to mention what he has done to any semblance of team chemistry. How any teammate could ever trust him again is beyond me. And this is coming from a guy who really liked Miggy.

<< <i>what he did was irresponsible, stupid and it will take time to forgive....i do wholeheartedly agree. but when all's said and done, he may have had a bad game anyway without the night before. We failed as a TEAM the entire month, and that is what i blame. dropping 5 of 6 to KC in Sept was the killer. I know that Cabrera learned from that mistake, at least i hope he did, and that's what i have to focus on and as a city we must forgive that transgression. it will take MUCH more time to forgive an ENTIRE TEAM collapse that massive..... I'm embarrassed to be a Tiger fan because of that, not Cabrera, the master of the 2-out-nobody-on-basehit, who finished 4th in the MVP vote.... >>
True enough. And I also wholeheartedly agree with your "master of the 2-out-nobody-on-basehit" comment, so I have to ask, are we really getting our money's worth out of him?
Don't forget, a lot of those 2-out-nobody-on-basehits broke seatbacks out in right-center field (while the ball was still on it's way up I might add), so that's another cost to the team right there .
