French Fleur De Coin sets

Well the question is fairly simple...

How accurate is the Krause Catalog for the French Fleur De Coin sets in the 1969-73 time frame?

The mintage seems low enough for 1969, 1970, 71 &72 sets and then the number jumps to 79,000 in 1973. What is the demand for these? These sets do have the large silver 10 Francs coin that in all fairness is attractive.

  • The 5 francs semeuse is also attractive, and both the 5 (1969) and 10 francs have edge incused inscriptions. By the way, pcgs assigns SP grades to them, just like the US satin finish coins.

Edit to add: I forgot to answer your question: it depends on the set, but Krause prices are lower than currnet market's prices.

Popular items, especially the scarce 1967 and 68 FDC sets which I've had the pleasure of owning.

1973/74 sets were over-produced and are easy to find. Hazing can be a problem though with these years and nice clean
examples do fetch a premium over book.

Most of the 1980's sets saw a return to low mintages and commensurately higher values exist.

Is a 1965 set common? I have one of those.

Nevermind, I guess it would have helped if I looked it up in Krause. I see the 1965 set has one of the higher mintages.

I obviously am no expert on these because I have not looked for them. It would seem that the pre 1972 sets are worth keeping in the original mint packaging in part because of the low mintage numbers- Krause is 110 for the 1969 set that has a mintage figure of under 10,000- off hand, I forgot what it was -could be 6-7,000. It just sems that 110 would be a little lite- but it could be that there is just as little interest in these for whatever reason.

I like my 1965 set because the 5F has a nice cameo effect and some colorful rim toning.

There's a big problem with PVC in the older holders and I believe this applies
to the later ones as well. I usually try to store coins separately from packag-
ing especially when the coins are easily removed.

I have not noticed a PVC issue with these yet. These are in a flat pack and came in a gray box.- All the original cards are still with the sets
