What Is a Fair Premium Over Spot

In the area I live their are a number of B&M shops.
As a sheep seeking to avoid being fleeced, I am asking for a bit of educational advice from frequent purchasers. In today’s marketplace what is a fair premium to expect to pay over spot for an American Gold Eagle or Canadian Maple Lead in the following sizes 1 oz, 1/2 oz or 1/4 oz.
Also, what is a fair premium over spot for common date modern $5 Comm. (Statue of Liberty, Constitution etc).
Thanks, Planchet

AGE's & Buff's usually carry a higher premium in this part of USA.

B&M shops are leaders in the "fleecing" lol
I would try local dealers &/or Local coin shows.
I always get the best buy prices at shows.
local B&M shop here L.A. told a customer $26 for a A.S.E.
BTW. online retailers/ebay is a good source to get an idea on what is fair

One dealer I contacted said that AGEs have very large premiums. He told me that he has a limited supply of one ounce Canadian Maples which were about 6% over spot, quoting me $65 over spot, and he said he had a couple of 1/2 oz Maples for which he quoted $34 over spot. He said that he didn't have any 1/4 oz Maples but said he did have one or two Australian Nugets which he would sell for $17 over spot.

Apmex sell prices are a good guide. I commonly bid on ebay for late date commemoratives like Statue of Liberty, Constitution, Jamestown, etc. I limit my bidding to 4% over melt. I lose with most but since they are common I only need to win on a few of these auctions when I am adding to my stack.

Hi Mark
Another local shop in my area has those coins from time to time and sells them at $10 over spot. He buys them at 95% over spot.

$10 over the melt value is a good price from a local shop. My local shop, if I recall correctly, buys for about 98% of melt.
One advantage of ebay purchases (provided you don't pay to much) is that ebay Bucks can save you 2% while rebate programs like Big Crumbs or Mr. Rebates can save you 2-3% more. Using those programs when sellers offer free shipping may get your final cost down to melt or even less. Text

What is Big Crumbs or Mr. Rebates ?
So, don't expect people to sell them to you at $10 over melt unless you have an absolutely winning smile.....
I guess anything is out there if you are persistent and look around.

<< <i>FWIW, there are dealers on out dealer-to-dealer network who offer to pay $18 over melt for modern commemorative $5's and $10's in the opriginal capsules.

Hi Tom
They were in the original capsule but no Original mint box or coa. The dealer offered me two of them at spot plus $10. Maybe it was easier to sell them to a customer than wholesale them off and mail them out. I should have taken him up on the offer.
<< <i>I saw AGE's being wholesaled at today's coin show at spot+3%. I found some of those at 1-2% over spot a short while back when spot was much higher. Krugs are seemingly available at spot or even $5-10 under at times. I picked up a couple more today at spot. Note that some of the dealers were asking +4 to +5% for the Krugs, and another $10 on top of that for Maples.
I guess anything is out there if you are persistent and look around.

I experience this also. Seems shows give better deals than dealer-dealer networks. Now only if there was a show every weekend!!!

Could be. Some of the smaller coin show circuit dealers are undercapitalized, and can't afford to tie up $500 bucks for two coins, pay the shipping and wait a week for their money. Some people don't want to gamble on spot dropping. Some people just don't care, and if they are making money on a quick flop are happy.
