1983 D Cent, 2.8G

Going through rolls of 83 Lincolns, came across one that looked like copper, but weighs 2.8 grams.

No debris or other forgein matter attached to it. Thickness and diameter of coin seem to indicate normal planchet.

Coin in AU condition. Rest of the coins in the roll all 2.5g.

Possible compostion of some other nation's coin?

Anyone venture a guess why this does not weigh 2.5 or 3.11?

I'm not sure what would add that much weight to it unless it was struck on either a world coin planchet or on a "rolled thick" stock.

  • Is it magnetic? Copper plated steel? Strangely enough, it meets the weight specs for the WW II steel cent. The first issue had a nominal weight of 2.689 grams and the second issue had a weight of 2.754 grams with a maximum weight of 2.981 grams. The Red Book uses a rough average of 2.70 for their weight in grams.
