After suffering through bitter defeat after bitter defeat at the hands of the Steelers it's nice to finally wake up to a victory. From my lofty perch it's also the best thing that could have happened to/for the team at this point of the season from a long term perspective. Let me explain........................
During last night's broadcast Matt Millen finally enunciated the thing I've harped on for years about the Browns and so many other NFL teams, continuity with the head coach. Here in the Dawg Pound it's been a regular rotating door every three years, going back to the early 1980's. A coach comes in, spends the first 1-2 years working with the previous coach's players and system before he finally gets his own personality imbedded on HIS players, then if he isn't in the Superbowl by season three he's gone; it's absolutely ridiculous. Look at the Steelers, they suffer and retool the team under the same coach and continue their winning ways year after year. Need I say more?
The Browns have finally found a coach who can beat Michigan!!!
Mangini might not be the next Don Shula/Vince Lombardi/Chuck Noll/Paul Brown incarnation, but talk around town to cut him loose after one miserable year are just plain stupid. Considering all the crap he had to start with, the injuries during the year and all the new players learning a new system, plus the fact that he beat the Steelers show me that he might have some ideas about what the team should be headed towards. One victory certainly doesn't make a season even though it was Pittsburgh, but at least there's hope.
I started going to games down at old Muny Stadium in the early 1960's when Cleveland was still a dominant team and the Saturday night games against Pittsburgh were ugly brawls. Even when the boys from Steel town had the worst record in the league they still had enough to put up a good fight and bloody some noses. They also had an owner who knew enough about the game to know that he had to stay away from the field decisions, trust his instincts when he picked his head coach and then just sat in the Box and enjoyed the games. Mr. Rooney did all that and had some enjoyable Sunday afternoons starting in the late 1960's.
So it's hard to feel sad for the Steelers right now. They'll be OK as long as they stick with Tomlin and ride out some bad games. The Browns would be wise to follow their example; get PO'd with the losses but don't tear things down and start all over. Savor the good games and build towards next year. Then just hope that when Pitt vs. Cleve comes up again it's in the teens with snow and a stiff, arctic wind!!!!!
Now you'll have to excuse me, I'm going to burn in effigy all those OSU coaches who just couldn't beat Michigan. I think I'll start with Cooper............................

Patriots dont get any well wishes after coming back to earth nor should the Steelers, one team I can truly say I felt a little remorse for is the Buffalo Bills of the early 90's though 4 in a row and they get NOTHING.
<< <i>There is no need to ever feel sad for any team that has had a recent run of greatness and a Super Bowl win or wins.
