The search is over at Notre Dame and Irish eyes are smiling for Brian Kelly. The third-year Cincinnati coach will leave the Bearcats to take over the Notre Dame program, both schools confirmed.
The Fighting Irish' 29th head coach, will be announced at a press conference Friday.
Kelly agreed to a five-year deal with the Irish.
"I am very pleased that a thorough and extensive search has led us to a new head coach in Brian Kelly, who I am confident will help us accomplish our goal of competing for national championships," Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick said in a statement released at 9PM.
Kelly , 48, led the Bearcats to a perfect 12-0 record this season and a berth in the Sugar Bowl against defending national champion Florida. Kelly, however, will not coach the Bearcats in the New Year's Day Bowl. Offensive coordinator, Jeff Quinn, will server as interim coach. Quinn also served as interim coach at Central Michigan, which Kelly left three years ago for Cincinnati. Quinn led the Chippewas to their first bowl win in school history in the Motor City Bowl.
Kelly, 48, is 34-6 during his stint Cincinnati, including an appearance in the Orange Bowl last year and a berth in the Sugar Bowl against defending national champion Florida Jan. 1. He has been named Big east coach of the year in each of his three seasons with the Bearcats.
Overall, Kelly is 171-60-2 in 19 seasons as a head coach, including two national titles at Grand Valley State. He previously led Central Michigan to a 19-16 win and back-to-back bowl berths. Kelly has been named the Big East coach of the year each of the last three years and also won the 2009 Home Depot national coach of the year award. Cincinnati's 12th-place finish in the AP top 25 was the school's highest ranking ever, though the fourth-ranked Bearcats will almost certainly eclipse that record this season.
Notre Dame's former coach, Charlie Weis, was fired Nov. 30 after five seasons and a 35-27 record. Weis twice led the Irish to a BCS bowl, losing both, but the program struggled during his final three seasons.
