Have you or will you complete your 2009 collecting goals?

With the $4.50 and $5 specials that PSA offer this year, I aggressively tried to get to 50% on a monster football set I started in 2007.

1992 Topps Gold Football Set

I am currently at ~40% and have another 41 cards for this set currently at PSA, which will put me at 45%. I am going to fall short because I could not come up with enough quality cards to submit.

So while I am waiting for my sub to pop, I was wondering how everyone else did on their 2009 collecting goals? Do you achieve your goals? If no, why not? or did your focus change during the course of the year?

Curious minds want to know.

Paul

The year's not over yet. LOL
I achieved some, won't achieve others, and it's still up in the air on some more. A few I haven't even tried for as things worked out.

I'll post my results come January 1 or so.

These were my goals at the beginning of the year:

    1. 1949 Bowman Roy Campanella rookie in PSA 3 or 4.
    2. Complete the Roy Campanella Bowman & Topps player set in PSA 4 & 5 (except for the '52 Topps, which I may never be able to afford).
    3. Complete a Preacher Roe Topps & Bowman card run in PSA 5 & 6.
    4. Add items to my Adam Wainwright collection.

    This is how I did:

    1. Got a PSA 4.5
    2. Still missing the '50 & '55 Bowman cards (but I did get a PSA 3 '52 Topps)
    3. I decided to start a Cardinal T206 set instead (I've got 1/3 bought including 2 HOFers and a couple harder to find backs)
    4. I added a few nice items... and then sold them all. LOL

So not too bad. If anyone has a nicely centered PSA 5 or 6 '50 or '55 Bowman Campy w/ great eye appeal please let me know. image

I was hoping to finish the 71 Topps FB set with a grade of 7.5. It looks like I will end up around 90% complete with a 7.49 GPA.
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set

I've done alright. Switched collecting goals midstream, and picked up some rockin' cards.

I'd say my collecting highlight was buying a '67 Yaz out of a card shop for $45 that graded a PSA 9. It doesn't get any better than that. image

I did complete my 1955 Topps Baseball set this year. My next goal is to complete 1960 Topps Baseball in PSA 8 before I go to my reward. I have been averaging one card per week and at that rate I will be done in 2011. However I need the more expensive stars and low pops so odds on me getting it done are 50-50.

I'm not so formal. I have to set goals for my job. I make collecting more fun than that. I try to keep my options open and look for deals rather than limit myself and risk overpaying. Since I'm building many different sets, it gives me lots of options.

I did make good progress on my sets this year. Highlights include:

    1) Picked up a PSA 9 1967 Tommy John
    2) Made a killer trade of my 1971 PSA 9 Claude Raymond for a PSA 8 replacement as well as a PSA 8.5 1967 Seaver RC, 1967 PSA 8's of the following: Mantle, Maris, Palmer, Perez, Carlton, and a few dozen minor stars and commons as well as a 1971 PSA 8 Bench, Blyleven RC and a few dozen PSA 8 commons and minor stars.
    3) Picked up a bunch of nice raw cards that graded well (e.g., PSA 9 '61 Pinson, PSA 9 '59 commons)
    4) Picked up a few upgrades for my 1969T baseball set
    5) Put my toe in the water for half point reviews. I don't plan to make a habit of it but figured I'd have a few of my best cards reviewed. Managed to get my '70 Bench upgraded to a 9 among other half point bumps.
  • I finished a '64 Topps BB set this year and have been primarily focusing on building the '65-'67 Topps BB sets. I'm about 65% done w/ '65, 60% done w/'66 and 75% done with '67... but somehow I need to zero in on completing ONE set because I think I'm about to start the '60 set. I guess my highlight of the year would be buying a '67 Killebrew at a show for $40 that graded PSA 8.5.
  • I was hoping to complete my 78 topps bball set, number 14 at a little less than 90%. Still looking for 53 Mantle and Mays to finish a raw/graded set, but am looking at psa5s. About half done with similar Bowman color and 52 Baseball set, have a feeling both are maybe 2015 goals.

    I've never set yearly goals...

I guess it keeps me from being disappointed.

To those who've met (most of) their goals? Congratulations!

My main collecting goal in 2009 was to continue enjoying the time I put into my HOF signed rookie card collection. I met that goal and exceeded it. I still have the anticipation and hope of a young child everytime I start searching ebay or any auctions or buy/sell/trade ads hoping that I'll find something neat to add to my collection. I love coming back to this board and posting my latest acquisition into my online gallery of my rc collection. The day that I lose that boyish feeling, is the day I walk away from my collection with no regrets. As long as this hobby can continue to give that to me, I'll continue to give to this hobby.

    I can relate!

I started off 2009 at around 40% on my '52 Football set and bailed on it and liguidated all but 5% of it. As of September I regretted selling so I started over again and am back up to 20+% Im realisticly thinking I might be able to get back up to between 40-50% on the set so being cautiously optimistic I will set my goal for 2010 at hopes of reaching 40%

Another little project I hope to get going on is buying some complete Raw Football sets from the late 80's and early 90's and placing them in binders.

I spent the biggest part of this year working on my Glavine sets, accumulating cards for the Smoltz sets I submitted a while ago (which finally went active) and improving my Maddux sets to be something more than minimalist and really rather lame, which they were last year at this time. Now they're only quasi-lame.

Of late, I've been sliding back into my earlier practices of working on earlier Braves player and team sets. Sometimes I feel like I've got a dozen blocks of partially carved marble but no statues, but I'm still having fun. As Mike says, that's the key.
