TPG MS-69 Received with Damage-Help

I purchased via the internet from a dealer, two modern US gold coins that were listed on the internet as being graded MS-69 in a TPG holder. Neither coin was imaged on the internet. Both were sold close to their bullion value.

On the first coin, at about 6 o'clock on the obverse edge of the coin is a large indentation that looks like something struck the edge of the coin. It is a semi-circle in shape. Is this acceptable for a MS-69 coin?

The second coin had a small sliver of either paper or cardboard on the inside of the holder on the obverse side of the coin. Does the foreign object in the holder de-grade the potential resale value of the coin and also jeopardize the surface of the coin?

Since MS69 modern gold coins are not difficult to find, just return them for an exchange or refund. You don't like them now, you won't like them any more later.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

If the TPG isn't PCGS then the first flaw sounds certainly acceptable by their standards. Debris in the holder doesn't change the grade at all. Even 70s often have a little dust in them. --Jerry

Slabs are not hermetically sealed, nor are they claimed to be. They are not waterproof either.

Modern bullion coins are very common with (rim dings) and graded ms69 by pcgs. I recently purchased a pcgs ms69 gold buffalo from a forum member here that had a HUGE rim ding.

69 pieces trade for bullion levels anyway so don't sweat it too much. If it really bothers you however- return them. There are plenty of 69 moderns out there.

Was it a Buffalo? If so, don't worry about it.

Sounds like you should be talking to customer service of the TPG.
