Does this slab/coin look authentic

I saw this on ebay with an Austrialian based seller. Feedback was 100% yet most recent was private of a total of some 400+ transactions. Seller has been selling on ebay since 2004.

I looked this up on NGC's website and it matches the database.

It looks ok to me, but I'm no expert on Swiss.

    Same here.
  • I'd be concerned about the lack of angle on the dash in the serial number on that slab.
I checked all my NGC slabs and they all have the angled dash.

    Hope this helps,

edited to add: the color of the hologram is wrong too...

Thanks JimK - I found this thread about the evolution of the holders and this one is consistent with NGC 9 type - What do you think?

  • I remembered I had an old fattie gen. 4 holder in my safe and although it doesn't have the angled dash (like the NGC announcement says to look for) the hologram is rainbow colored- but I don't know how it would look in a photo.
I am still skeptical about the color on the hologram on that one...
My other NGC slabs are gen. 14 or better and they all have the angled dash, unlike the links you posted where the dashes aren't angled till gen. 24?
Maybe we need to find somone with another gen. 9 slab before we can call this one?

edited to add: actually I think that might be a gen. 11 slab or better as it has the indent below the label...

Thanks JimK. I believe it is down to the hologram as the front looks consistent.

I will try and lookup some of mine (I have a few) - any help would be appreciated. I am now a bit more confident, as I do not believe people would fake the older slab type and I have yet to see a counterfeit mentioned for that slab type. It also has the correct text on the hologram unlike the stated counterfeits. Any other input would be appreciated. Color difference may be a result of the image/lighting.

  • So, what was it that first made you suspicious of this one? Just curious.

I see no red flags raised here.

The coin is OK, IMO. Here's a large image of the same design. You can compare this to your actual coin, but I don't see any problems.

  • Holder and coin look OK to me.

I had a major hassle with an Ebay buyer about a year ago who threatened
to turn the coin I sent him over to the "proper authorities" because he thought the
    holder was a fake.

I sent him the "evolution of the NGC holder" web site and hooked him up with
someone down there who helped me to finally convince him that it was
    authentic.

That didn't take long to write but the episode went on for several days image
No,no- the kids and the cat are all right honey.
It's just that I got my PCGS grades.
  • Coin looks a lot better than the grade IMHO by the way....

Thanks guys - I believe coin has MS-63/4 credentials and therefore my interest.

I just received this note from NGC:

"Thank you for contacting NGC. Nothing about the image arouses suspicion as this holder appears genuine.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have additional questions.

    Regards,
    "

  • I still don't understand what about this raised any suspicions whatsoever.

Was it something about the slab/coin just didn't look right, or was it the non-US seller with little recent activity, or something else?

    Just curious.

It was the older slab and different hologram color, as well as location of seller (Australia), which makes slabbing less common. Seller had 100% feedback with many "Private" transactions.
