French Jeton from 1785

Hi folks-

Can someone recommend a reference where I can learn more about French Jetons from the 18th century? I found this one amongst some token I purchased but know nothing about them. Thanks.

Lane

Here's some info on that one -

    Obverse legend: LUDOV.XVI.REX CHRISTIANISS.
Obverse Description: Bust right of Louis XVI signed DUVIV. (DuVivier)
Reverse legend: Conventus CLERI Gallican HABITUS LUT. PARISIOR. MDCCLXXXV.
Reverse Description: five lines, radiating cross over, three fleurs de lys below.
Reverse translation: The assembly of the clergy of Gaul held at Lutece, the city of Parisians in 1785.

(again at the mercy of Google translator)

There aren't many sources of info on jetons (that I've found), unless you can find a seller with info on a specific example. There are books on these but they are in French for the most part, so I haven't yet purchased any.

Olmanjon - Sorry for the late response, but now that I'm a little more seasoned at identifying these, I'll give you some info on this one if you need it.

This is a restrike, thought to be done in the 1960's. But the interesting thing is that it's a restrike of the very popular Franco-American series of jetons that were originally issued in the 1750's. This one is a scene from the new world, the Canadian wildlife found by French explorers. Here's a LINK to an original strike.

Wow--was I surprised when I opened this post, scrolled down and found my own Jeton. Thanks for the info on it. I had completely forgotten about it. Did the re-strikes have any value as such? I see the original has a hefty sum on it. Of course it was in silver and mine is in copper. I don't even remember where I got it from either. Thanks again.

There is a seller on VCoins who has some of the Franco-American restrikes, asking $65 apiece. I'd guess around $40 or so on one of those, but they're so uncommon that I don't have actual sales to use for price comparison.

And yeah, the originals are quite pricey, but those auction pieces went for more than I would have even imagined any jeton selling for. Before seeing those prices, I've not seen a jeton for over a grand, and even that is very rare.

Sounds like I got a deal. Can't remember exactly what I paid for it, but I don't imagine I paid more than a couple of bucks for it. Thanks for the info again.
