New acquisition. Penny run complete

I picked this little darling from a group of five being sold by an Australian seller using a less than optimum photo. The starting bid was 0.54 aussie cents and some numpty with a feedback of 20 sniped them for 10 aussie dollars, luckily I'd set up a snip for about 20 dollars. All fire coin were UK fine at best, I really didn't expect anyone to bid on them. I'm sure if the numpty had got them they would have been non the wise as to what they had got. So I have been on tenterkooks for the last 2 weeks wondering if I'd wasted my £6.

Anyway here it is, a 1908 F164A. Freeman rates it at R5 but its only the second one I've seen for sale and the only other specimenI know of is owned by Gary S

What sets this one apart from others of the date?

  • There are 4 varieties for the 1908 penny. Freeman 164, 164A, 165 and 166. These are made up of three ovverse designs and two reverses. Reverse C has the E of penny aligned with a boarder tooth and reverse D the E aligns between to teeth. Odv 1 has the I of IND aligned with a tooth and I of IMP aligned with a gap. Obv 1* has the I of IND to gap and I of IMP to tooth. Obv 2 has both I's to tooth. The four varieties are 1+C, 1*+C, 2+C and 2+D. The 1*+C is by far the hardest to find.

The one from the Crocker collection sold for, including fees about $950. I think mine although quite worn is this somewhat in better condition than the Crocker peice.

  • Congratulions.

I wish I could actually FINISH a series. I keep wanting to try and upgrade it-higher grade here,
better toning there, nit picking. Costly as heck too image
No,no- the kids and the cat are all right honey.
It's just that I got my PCGS grades.
