How do you sell your 1980-90's extras?

All right,
I am trying to get rid of some cards and have had a hard time selling anything from the 80's on ebay, mostly because by the time you ship a set or two the postage is so high its not worth it to the buyers. Most of the cards aren't bad, I have 1987 Topps and 1986 Donruss MLB sets, 89-90's basketball sets, etc., i.e. not commons but nothing great either. What have/did you do to reduce the volume of your collection? Will dealers take sets off your hands at shows for $5 a pop? Are stores still buying this stuff? Craigslist (although I don't know if I want to be dealing cards from my house on this venue)? Donating to charity is an option as well.

I am spending way to much time putting together ebay auctions just so that 80-90% of the final cost of an item is shipping and handling, but I don't just want to dump the cards either.

Thanks,
Adam B.

  • Craigslist gets a bad rep because of con artists, but I was able to sale about (15) 5000 count boxes of mixed years from 1980-2008 for $300. Guy called me a week later and asked if I had any complete sets to sale. Sold him about a dozen random sets and another 5000 count box of stars, rookies and HOF'ers for another $300. May not sound like much because of the volume of cards, but it was an easy way to clear a lot of space and get a little something in return.
  • When I buy collections on Craigslist, I take what I want to grade, etc.. and then sell the cheap sets, wax boxes and singles to a buddy who still does shows and can sell the cheap sets for a couple dollars a pop. The rest I put out behind my garage and my neighbor takes them and gives them to Little League kids, etc.. The cheaper sets just do not sell anymore. Even something like 1987 Topps has become very hard to get even $5.00

Why not donate them to Shriner's Hospital or a local Children's Hospital and get a tax write-off. Several years ago I donated about 400,000 cards.

I have broken up all the years into team sets and traded with some members of the board for Red Sox,
you can see people were happy here

    Dodgers
    Mariners
    Indians

I doubt dealers would be willing to pay $5 for hand collated sets of 86-87 Topps as I regularly see many dealers trying (Unsuccessfully I might add) to SELL those sets at $5 a pop. Collector to collector is the only way to bring any money in for those sets. Buying those sets for more than a buck or two is a losing proposition at best
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
