The greatest college football games you ever saw

Not in any particular order...............

1. Alabama beats Penn State for the national championship in the Sugar Bowl (1979 ?)
2. Doug Flutie beats Miami, Fla. in the Orange Bowl
3. Vince Young beats USC for the national championship in the Rose Bowl.
4. Nebraska beat Warren Sapp and Ray Lewis in their own backyard for the national championship.
5. Joe Montana led Notre Dame back against Houston in the Cotton Bowl. I think they were down like 21 in the 4th quarter.

  • I've only seen ONE college football game all the way through in my whole life.

A few years ago, I happened to have a friend staying over and he was a college football fan.

There were two games on that night, but for some reason we decided to watch the Boise State/Oklahoma game (2007 Fiesta Bowl).
WOW...ended up being THE best football game I had ever seen.

  • I also have only seen one. Maybe two. Can't remember who played. Can't remember what happened. Great game though.

the 1969 USC-UCLA THAT WAS won by USC 14-12... AN AMAZING END ZONE Catch.

I saw that on TV... The most amazing game I saw live in person was the regular season game between UCLA and Michigan at the Rosebowl- UCLA was up by 8 with under two minutes and lost- I think the score was 24-23 and was either in the 1988 or 89 season

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

Auburn-Alabama 1972. Last regular season game-Alabama was undefeated, Auburn had one loss. Alabama dominated the game and led 16-0 in the 4th quarter. Auburn finally put together a little bit of a drive, and kicked a field goal. They then returned two blocked punts for touchdowns in the last minutes to win 17-16.

THE Boise State game is the best I ever watched on TV. The whole game was good... not just the magical ending.

The best I have been to live:

Went to 3 Rose Bowls, UCLA was the underdog in all 3, and UCLA won all of them. None were spectacular though.

I have vivid memories of UCLA beating USC, at the Colisium about 1982, on a sack on the last play of the game.

Worst ever was Nebraska pounding UCLA in Pasadena about 1985. It was about 35 to nothing at halftime and we left. Had to physically lift cars out of the way to get out car out as we were deeply boxed in. Luckily there was a group of muscle heads going around moving cars as a lot of people were leaving at halftme!

Um, Miami-Ohio State in 2003. Something like 40 players played in that game who went on to the NFL.

1991 Tenn. vs. Notre Dame. Don't remember the score but it was a great comeback win for Tenn. I watched the game at a Mr. Gattis Pizza in Hattisburg Miss. I was there on a pledge trip, the ATO's at Southern Miss were having band party for homecoming. I do not recall having a Farve sighting that weekend, but I recall some of the guys talking about the last years QB showing up and that he was riding the bench for the Falcons.

He turned out to be OK

The 1971 Nebraska-Oklahoma game was one heck of a great game (high scoring, back and forth slugfest with Nebraska winning the game by a point or two as the clock ran down).

That year the final rankings after the bowl season was #1 Nebraska (undefeated); #2 Oklahoma (one loss to Nebraska); and #3 Colorado (two losses to Nebraska and Oklahoma). All of the games between these three teams were good ones and I do not think at anytime since 1971 has a single conference had teams ranked #1 - #3 at the end of the season. Nebraska had Johnny Rodgers, Colorado had Cliff Branch and Oklahoma had a superstar whose name I do not recall.

Cliff Branch played years for the Raiders in the NFL. In college I remember one game where he fielded the opening kickoff in the end zone and rand it back for a 100+ yard TD. From the time he caught the ball in the end zone, ran it out, ran the entire field through traffic and reached the other end zone the game clock ticked off a grand total of ELEVEN seconds.

Cliff Branch was one very, very, very fast football player. He was a speed merchant for the Raiders for his NFL career and cscored many TDs on returns and long bombs.

In person... Notre Dame v. Florida State 1993, which was then called "The Game of the Century".
  • In person game was the 2004 Capital One Bowl, Iowa against LSU. The last second snap and long throw down the field for the game winning touchdown was the coolest play. Lots of NFL'ers on those 2 teams including Jamarcus Russell and Joseph Addai.

    Ah, you youngsters!

Meechigan State v Notre Dame, 1966. Often refered to as "The Game of the Century". Ended in a tie and the skewls shared the National Champion title.

Bama was robbed of a national championship that year. We were the ONLY undefeated team and we finished third. Plus we were the two time defending champions, we won in 64 & 65, then went 11-0 only to finish third. I wasn't even born then and I'm still holding a grudge!

  • Crimsontider. My Penn State Nittany Lions have had 3 undefeated seasons and have not been named national champs in any of those seasons. Talk about being robbed!
  • Have to throw in my vote for the 2005 Rose Bowl. Nobody gave the Longhorns a chance--everybody was saying USC was the greatest football team of all time. And Texas finally got a defensive stop on fourth down late in the fourth quarter--a first would have allowed USC to close it out--then Texas scored to take a last second lead on a fourth down when Vince ran it in. I'm not even a Texas fan (or a college football fan in general) but I was going crazy. It was like a Rocky movie. Except, you know, football.

although it wasn't my greatest game that I ever saw, I have to say that the LSU/Kentucky game a few years back when the Kentucky coach had already been doused with gatorade and then LSU completed that miracle catch to end the game....this was the greatest end to a game I ever saw.
  • I am not really into college football, too hard to keep up the players, unless they are someone like Tebow. Having said that there have been a few games I watched with anticipation, perhaps the most so was the 1997 Orange Bowl, Nebraska vs Tennessee. Peyton and the Tennessee Volunteers lost 42-17 to the Nebraska, while I lost $500. Still kind of annoys me. I am pretty sure Peyton had led the Volunteers to an undefeated season to that point. It is possible Peyton should owe me $800-900....can't remember the pay out now. :^)
