When (if ever) will PSA begin slabbing racks & trays?

We are all aware that there is an epidemic of vintage pack counterfeiting & resealing on ebay. And there are still collectors out there who assume that rack packs are pretty much immune to counterfeiting & resealing.

Steve Hart, pack authenticator for PSA, however recently wrote that resealed pre-75 racks is the "biggest problem" in the unopened hobby today. He adds that there are people out there that are very good at "recrimping" the seals and that their "work" is very hard to detect. Hart further stated that vintage racks with more than one star showing have a higher chance of being resealed.

So with this being said why hasn't PSA begun slabbing racks so that us vintage rack collectors can buy with "confidence"? If these recrimped seals are that hard to detect then surely a prospective buyer would have even further difficulty with just an ebay picture to look at.

And what about wax trays? Trays are very popular with collectors and '77 and older trays are scarce. They aren't tampared with nearly as much as racks but there are reseals and counterfeits floating around out there so the security of a PSA slab would be nice for us buyers.

Come on PSA and give us collectors a nice Christmas present this year and start slabbing racks & trays!image

I have been asking about grading rack packs for almost two years now. I wonder if PSA feels they can't authenticate racks and trays with 100% certainty and that is why they haven’t started grading them yet.

Imagine how heavy the holders would be? The holders on 69 & 70 basketball are heavy enough!

Edited to add: Still, it would be a positive addition to the hobby.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
  • Has anyone gotten any reasons/answers from PSA about why they don't, if it's in their plans, etc?
I still maintain that it open up a new revenue stream for them.
I've been trying to learn from you guys about what's real and what may not be, and seeing that red and white label would sure ease my worries when considering buying racks, particullary older high value ones or ones with stars on top

And please keep that holder size /weight in consideration when you do!

And the size of the rack slabs would have to be enormous. I would assume that it would require PSA to purchase a new ultrasonic welder and horn as well as new templates for the larger holder to accommodate the varying sizes of racks and headers. I'm not sure there would be cause to assume enough revenue to undertake such expenses.

  • Soon making an appearance as who knows what?
