Looks like I should be busting all these 90 pro-set boxes, instead of saving them for my son's college fund. What makes it so special?Who really collects 90 pro-set??
The Lud Denny was NOT inserted into packs. It was a promotional item created for the company president that ended up in the collections (like the 1990 Topps George Bush).
Regarding that seller's master 1990 set: If I had $1,000+ to blow right now, I would seriously contend for it. If broken apart, the set is easily worth two, possibly three times that much!
While this is a fantastic auction, I think you've overvalued the market for the individual cards quite a bit. I could be way off, but looking at the condition, I don't think this lot is worth more than $1000 broken up and I doubt the auction will crack $750 in this market. I hope I'm wrong, though. It would benefit me if the interest in this set increased.

Is this yours? If so, you have an incredible assembly of 1990 Pro Set! I really do wish I could afford to bid on this set.
The Manley card has sold for twice what it used to and many more collectors are aware of it's existence than there were a year ago.
Usually, you never see 1990 FACT singles for sale and the last few commons sold between $20-35, granted you may not sell 250+ at that price but you could literally list them at $15-20 with best offer and accept $5-10 offers all day for them. I get emailed Pro Set error/variation/promo want-lists all the time and the 1990 FACT cards are usually one of their top items.
The Marion (which the market is pretty full of right now), Lombardis, Lud Denny, Sanders Hawaii could easily pull in $500 (total) depending on when and how they get listed.
Keep in mind that Pro Set (specifically their variations) is one of the most aggressively collected sets and that on ebay at any given time, the "usual suspects" variations are listed but these upper-level rarities hardly ever show up, and with interest building in them, when these do show up, it's usually a big deal and lots of bidding ensues.
Most collectors associate the words 'Pro Set' with 'worthless' so it would seem unlikely that in this economy this lot would break up and get a couple thousand. The veteran Pro Set collector knows that so few copies of the Manley etc exist and they bid accordingly - some of the bidders of the last Manley that sold were placing bids at $300-500 where a year ago, they wouldn't go over $200! In any other case, I'd say that this market would seriously affect what cards will pull in, but just not with Pro Set variations and rarities, they seem to be one of the few things that have increased in value over the last year and a half.
are the error variations documented in Beckett or somewhere else??? I have a sh..load of Proset in 500 count boxes just waiting to be searched....think it would be a great endeavor for my kids over Christmas in their spare time....
No the auction isn't mine, but I am a very interested spectator. I guess my issue is that whenever I see the major error/variations up for auction, they invariably seem to be in ragged condition. I wouldn't think that rarity alone is enough to keep the prices as pumped up as they have been...but I guess we'll see.
Again, I hope you're right and the bidders go nuts here. I'd love for people to start busting all of those boxes out there and flood Ebay to normalize prices a bit.
<< <i>God I HATE threads like this. I was hoping for a good deal, if not a steal. Apparently that's not going to happen now. >>
I hope you are kidding. What kind of steal did you think you'd get against the Pro Set enthusiasts that are all ready and set to throw down some cash for it?
<< <i>Could you explain what the FACT set is and how it was distributed?
Also, I was not aware on the two versions of the Lombardi hologram. Any info on that? >>
FACT cards are a (somewhat) parallel set to the first series. They look a lot like the pack-issued cards but they have trivia and math questions where the text on back should be. They were distributed to select schools in the Cincinnati area. Pro Set had this program from 1990-1992 with the 1990 cards being the rarest. Regular searches on sites like beckett and sportsbuy show almost no examples for sale of the 1990 cards.
The Lombardi holos came in a few different varieties if I remember correctly. There's the "executive" edition that is numbered differently on back (or maybe it was the first few hundred?), there are known examples of blank fronts, blank backs and unnumbered versions.
I remember the Johnny Holland no name error. I think I bought it for $50 at its peak in the early 90's. Brilliant move for a young 14 year old.
Weren't there a bunch of Walter Stanley errors? The Dickerson and Santa Claus cards sure were hot. >>
Stanley has his jersey number listed as 8 on back for the error. It's 86 on the correction. NO #87 version exists despite what many lists (beckett) say.
I opened a box of series 1 about a year and a half ago that had all the typical corrections, except there were 2 NNOB Hollands and 1 corrected Holland. 1990 Pro Set, especially series 1 had the strangest collation.
The only dealer that I know of who had a complete 1990 Pro Set Fact Cincinnatti set was Mike Hattley - who I bought my Dolphins team set from. I paid around $300 for my Dolphins team set...so just imagine what the entire set would be worth of singled out.

The Manley alone could probably get $700-800.
Each common FACT card: $20 (300+ card set)
FACT Stars: $25-60 ea.
FACT Dickerson #338 (unreleased): ??? (Probably $100-200)
Lud Denny #338: $180 (maybe even a $200 BIN)
Fred Marion "Belt" error: $80-100
Barry Sanders #1A/Hawaii: $100-125 easily
Pro Bowl Tasker, Johnson, Thompson, Haddix: $30-40 ea.
Lombardi Holos: $50-100
Plus all the $2-5 error cards!
Collecting Robin Ventura and Matt Luke.

Pulled a Marion out of a pack a few weeks ago
but didn't know what the variation was
A fellow member said that it's missing the "belt"
Now that I see the variation card it's hilarious!
