<<Speaking of those clads, has anyone assembled a similar list for them?
I'd also love even a speculative estimate on original and/or surviving populations of these Type Bs.
Very useful thread! Thanks, everyone.>>
There is very little activity on clad B sales. I remember a 1969 D B unc selling for one or two hundred dollars and a circulated 1970 D B for about the same price.
Based on my experience in the Massachusetts area, I estimate mintages to be: 1969 D B 1,000,000 1970 D B 500,000 1971 D B 80,000 1972 D B 40,000
Most of these, I assume, are still circulating, but in lower grades now.

In Pensylvania between 2006-2009 he went through 700,000 quarters and found 1969 D B 7 1970 D B 4 1971 D B 2 1972 D B 2
In Massachusetts 1973-1988 I went through 715,000 quarters and found 1969 D B 53 1970 D B 21 1971 D B 3 1972 D B 2
Hellgee's experience would suggest 1971 D B and 1972 D B are much more common than my estimates. His 71's and 72's find were 1/2 his 1970 D B and more than 1/4 of his 1969 D B finds. If my 1969 D B and 1970 D B estimates are right, that would indicate a mintage of about 250,000.
As to finding about equal numbers of 1971 and 1972 in our 700,000 quarter batches, Remember there were a heck of a lot of circulating quarters added in the gap between our searches - 1989-2005.
However 7 out of 7 1971 D B's have the same die marker and hence it is a one die coin. 1972 D B's seem equally rare. The average quarter reverse die life in 1971 was 170,000. The actual output of a given die could vary quite a bit from that.
Edit: corrected number of 1971 D B checked for die chip.
I agree. The PCGS attributed label is worth $, but it costs you $. I think the cheapest service fee is $14 plus $24 variety attribution fee plus mailing fees.

Type B unattributed lot 1833 1957 NGC 66 rainbow $50
Did everybody catch that one? >>
I noticed that one, almost bid, but the reverse was a bit too 'splotchy' for my liking. The obverse was toned 'rainbow', but the reverse didn't impress me, and my guess would have it in a PCGS MS65 holder. '57 is one of those dates that MS65 doesn't support the $55 bid, buyers premium, shipping from TT, then the shipping both ways, grading and attribution fees from our hosts. Had the reverse been toned similarly to the obverse, I would have jumped on at $55-$60, but no more (and eventually would have just sent it to the guys ATS to keep it in it's MS66 holder, with the attribution).

Lee, yeah, that is a large enough fee to think twice about slabbing with the error AND variety......but then again, how many have you seen like it? Not to mention, it's the third toughest date, and, quite honestly, could become the toughest.....only 3 more graded than the '62, and 15 more than the '56. You KNOW you're sending that one in for the whole 9 yards! If not, I'll Paypal ya $40 for it so I can!
Kidding aside, again, nice pick-up...I'd love to own that!
ebay 1959 b MS65 48.76 sad to say i didnt get it, tryed but in the last second got booted darn darn nice coin lee, well on a brighter note went thru a roll of 62 and 63 this weekend and found a b of each low ms if i am lucking but is still fun finding them................ also found a extra d on one of the 1964 it looks like a scratch mark but closer look like a d in the cherry pickers guide it shows one below the vine this one is right on the vine anyone have or seen one of these ?

ok i was watching these auctions last night and have a question there were 2 1962 pcgs 66 last night i think one went for 20 bucks and the other was 120.00 now i am just curious what is the difference, it looked to me like some kinda doubling on the 120 dollar one ? http://teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=2898&lot=1703 ok went back and looked this morning i see the other went up to 90 in the last minute.

Over the last few years the number of type B for sale on Ebay at one time has gone up. I saw it at 77 offers once and then it dropped to 44 not too long ago. Today doing a search for "quarter type b" turns up 88 entries, a new high.

I'd also love even a speculative estimate on original and/or surviving populations of these Type Bs.

There is very little activity on clad B sales. I remember a 1969 D B unc selling for one or two hundred dollars and a circulated 1970 D B for about the same price.
Based on my experience in the Massachusetts area, I estimate mintages to be:
1969 D B 1,000,000
1970 D B 500,000
1971 D B 80,000
1972 D B 40,000
Most of these, I assume, are still circulating, but in lower grades now.
