What is the oldest cards of a living player?
I know that Yogi Berra and Stan Musial are still alive from the 1948 Bowman set. Does anybody know what cards exist for living players from before these?

I'm thinking there may be someone from the '33 Goudey set still around, but Bob Feller was on a '36 Goudey.

The oldest ex player to ever live (or lived the longest is Chet Hoff) 107.
He was born and raised about 4 blocks from my house, he is buried in the cemetery
behind my house, Dale Cemetery.

It is the R314C Canadian Creamy Wide Pen (NOT made by Goudey, it was made by the World Wide Gum Co. ....... sometimes called "Canadian Goudey's")
The set is sometimes called by other names.... R314 "type 4" I believe.
The whole group of R314's (5 different sets) used to be called 1936..... but proof shows the R314C's are from 1937 (Bobby Doerr among others)
For example, Nolan Ryan played from 66 to 93. So I select an active player since 93....someone like Griffey Jr. And someone who had a long career retiring around 66, I'll pick Whitey Ford.
So you've got 1950 - 1967 Ford, 1967 - 1993 Ryan, 1993 - Present Griffey Jr. That's only three players spanning 60 years.
So my question, what is the perfect succession of players which would minimize the number necessary? And what year should we begin with?

<< <i>Before he died September 13th of this year, Lonny Frey was the last remaining player to appear in the 1934 Goudey set. Everyone in the 1933 Goudey set has passed away.

That is simply remarkable. This would make for a great PSA/DNA Article.

Never mind. I just realized Yogi doesn't have a 1966 card.

<< <i>Replace Whitey Ford with Yogi Berra and you have a full run back to 1948.

Actually, if you replace Nolan Ryan with Tommy John, and then replace Ford with Berra, you get back to 1948.
Yogi Berra - 1948 Bowman to 1964 Topps
Tommy John - 1964 Topps to 1989 Topps/Upper Deck
Ken Griffey Jr - 1989 Topps/Upper Deck to the present
You could also substitute Warren Spahn for Berra and get the same result.
Steve
Hugh Duffy - N172 to T206
Jack Quinn - T206 to 1933 Goudey
Bill Dickey/Billy Herman/Leo Durocher - 1933 Goudey to 1952 Topps
Mickey Mantle - 1952 Topps - 1969 Topps
Nolan Ryan 1969 Topps - 1993 Topps
Derek Jeter - 1993 Topps to present
Steve
1948-1965 Yogi Berra
1963-1989 Pete Rose
1989-Present Ken Griffey Jr.

The run all the way back to the beginning is awesome!!
Until he retired, Julio Franco would have been a good one. From 1983 until 2007 I believe. You could put Yaz behind him, for 60-83. And you would oh so close to Pee Wee Reese 1941 Play Ball.
Fun game, huh?

<< <i>He played over that span but he didn't have cards over that span... >>
1977 Record Breaker.....but I don't think Minoso should be included.

<< <i>Some great posts, Tommy John is a great link, as is Rose.

Speaker had retired by 33 and was a manager in the minors IIRC.

PS Clark Griffith may be better than Duffy, he actually pitched til 1914, but his N172 was in the minors.

I think he played in 5 decades too, not sure if he has cards in all of them, he does have one in the 60 Fleer set.
