tracking down a specific card?

From what I know, its basically impossible to find a specific graded card if its not listed in a registry set...but aside from that, is there a way to query the registry to see if a serial number belongs to someone? My wife isn't into cards at all, except for one really old set that just kinda caught her eye. Since then, we have graded a few cards from her collection, just to get a start into a registry set. I think there were only a handful of cards that were graded before ours, but thought I might see if there was a way to contact the owner of those few cards and see if there was a chance they might be for sale or trade.

If anyone has any insight into how one might go about finding the owner of specific cards, I would be all ears. Its a crap shoot anyway, I doubt if they would be for sale, but it can never hurt to ask!

If you post what you're looking for I think you'd be surprised what some of the members of this board will come up with.

Its a pretty obscure and not widely collected set...but here it goes. 1893 Arbuckle History of Sports & Pastimes. There really aren't many graded at all, probably because there isn't much demand...although they are neat cards, which we get a kick out of collecting. In raw, we have the set (some obviously nicer than others), plus the majority of the variations that are known, even though they aren't recognized by psa yet.

I think there is one graded one on Ebay right now, but there are some others that I've seen in the pop report that I would be more interested in...if anybody out there knows anything about them. Speaking of which, I let my membership expire so I haven't looked at the pop report for some time, but I doubt if it has gone up though.

The problem is that the Arbuckle issue requires the oversize slab. As a result, PSA did not grade them until the addition of the larger slab.

SGC has graded them virtually since their inception (because the gaskets could be cut to accommodate them in the regular sized slab. I actually have a New Jersey Arbuckle states card. Pretty neat stuff.

    Good luck in your search...

It's a fairly easy issue to find in nice shape and raw. Have you tried looking for the card or cards you're looking for in raw shape. Even the more popular sports are very inexpensive.

Yep, its a 50 (51) card set, with quite a few variations that would push the "master" set to roughly 77 or 78 cards. I think my wife and I may have accumulated 90-100 cards total, with at least 1 complete set in decent condition. I've sent some into PSA, thought I would do a little better than I did, but I did get some 5's back. In raw, for their age, they really are inexpensive, and they are pretty neat cards, although the card stock is thin and you'll get dinged in grading because of the accompanying issues with that. The stories on the back are definitely dated and interesting to read, and could even be considered a little Archie Bunker-ish. All in all, its pretty much the only issue that my wife and I equally enjoy, so its alot of fun for us.

I haven't seen any SGC graded cards, and like I said, only the sole PSA graded one on Ebay currently. Lots of raws though. There is one card in particular that we saw in the pop report that would be awesome to see if we could get because if memory serves me right it was a 7 or 8 NQ (don't remember now, and I let my membership lapse so I can't go back and check at the moment)...but even finding it seems pretty unlikely.

There are 15 cards total graded by PSA. The highest graded is a single PSA 6 of the #48 card and it’s the only example of that card graded. After that there’s 3 PSA 5, 3 PSA 4, and the rest are PSA 2 – 3. It’s a good possibility that the person who owns the #48 card wants it every bit as much as you do, so if you want one in a PSA holder you’ll have to send it in yourself.

Is it a non sport set? If so it's very possible that Bob Marcy of ScottsdaleCards.com has them- it right in the era of what he carries. I agree for something that obscure you'll be better off buying raw and submitting, probably save a lot of money that way too.

I have maybe 5 copies of that #48 card, none of which would grade that high. Of the 15 graded, 6 are my wife's and I. Thin card stock seems to be the killer for these. But yeah, I usually scour for high grade raw cards, and like I said earlier, we probably have over 100 raw cards collected to date. I've thought about the owner of the psa6 wanting to keep it as much as I would like to get it for our set. If thats the case, it is what it is. Can't do much about it.

Griffins - Awesome! Thanks for the link. You never know what you may find if you ask the right people. Even if he doesn't have exactly what I'm looking for, he may know of a few rocks to turn over.

    I appreciate the feedback guys!
