What happened to the Government being for the people and by the people

I thought the people were to be the ones who told government what they wanted, not Government telling the people what they were going to do and to Hell with the People....Where has the American Backbone gone to....China!

Sadly you will not see Americans up in arms until you take away their cable. If that were to happen there would be rioting in the streets.

  • The people can blame a lot of this on themselves by not having stood up for themselves in the past and questioned and demanded answers from the government....each day goes by there is less likelihood of the American way of life ever returning to its once respected position within the world stage.

Complaining is much more effective if more people do it. Yes, when there's an opportunity
to turn stupidity on itself we should all sieve it. If a store won't give you your money back
for bad meat then toss it behind their coolers on the way out.

Complaining is only completely ineffective when you complain alone.

  • Government for the people and by the people left with Eisenhower. In his farewell address, he warned of the influence of the military-industrial complex. Coincidentally, Eisenhower's election was the first to be viewed on television. Soon after politicains became the Masters of the people, rather than serving the American people.

There are a number of reasons why the common folk

are unable to reverse the situation we find ourselves in.

    1. Both parties have been corrupted

    2. It cost too much money for decent
folks to run and be elected.

    3.The laws and regulations necessary
to correct the problem and disipline the offenders
are stymied in a congress that has been bought
and paid for. Third parties do not do well in national
    elections.

Some of the rules we need include the following.

    A. In the Senate, cloture should require only 50% +1

    B. Restore Glass/ Steagall word for word.

    C. No Government employee can take employment with
any firm that lobbies Government nor may they seek to
influence government officials on behalf of a company or
foreign entity for a period of at least 10 years after leaving
    office.

    D. Break up the mega banks as constituting a monopoly
and restraint of trade and commerce.

    E. Total public financing of all Federal election with strict
    monetary caps.

F.Outlaw the bundling of complex loans for sale as tranches.

    G. Freeze all congressional and appointed Federal positions
in any year that has a deficit in it as to spending.

    H. Restore a National Usury Law with a cap of Prime Rate plus 7%.

    I. Limit bank penalties and surcharges to a National MAXIMUM limit.

    J. Professional lobbyists shall be registered with the Federal Government
and charged a fee of 500,000 per year per lobbyist.

    K. Former officers in the military from the rank of colonel on up, shall under law
be restricted from any lobbying activities or they shall forfeit all pension and
allowances permanently as well as incarceration.

L.Food and drug enforcement shall have their budget expanded to the degree necessary
to protect the health and welfare of the people of the Nation.

    M. Appointment to the Federal bench openings shall not be delayed or denied, except for
issues of competency, or matters that would preclude their serving on the bench.

    N. Off shore banking or corporate shells intended to avoid the payment of lawful taxes shall
be outlawed with mandatory fines and jail sentences for convicted offenders. This will include
individuals, and attorneys and accountants having knowledge of such offenses as well as all
corporate officers having knowledge of such offenses.

While there are probably thousands of laws needed to protect the people. these are some
    that come to mind.

  • Today a fire department was orderd to take down a sign that said "Merry Christmas" on it. The sign was made over 50 years ago by firefighters at that station.
They had hung it every year for over 50 years, but this year soon after hanging it up they received a couple complaints and down it came.

I believe we have already seen the best that we have seen of the U.S. and our days are numberd, unless an outright revolution takes place to restore justice

Okay, I'm considering it. What's your point? The crime rate of the major cities has decreased since the 1970's. Are you going to blame that evil disco music for the high rate of murders back then? What does gangsta rap and today's movies have to do with anything? Again, what is your point? The only thing I can think is that you don't like America or its people. To you sir, I say: fine, get the hell out. If America is so bad, go live somewhere else and take your bellyaching with you.

Ugh, I hate going so off topic, but wow there are some scary people on this forum. Ok, dlimb, in your mind the crime rate in Chicago is worse than ever...so explain this:

Chicago Homicide Rates per 100,000 residents, 1870-2000
    Year Homicide Rate
    1870 2.6
    1880 5.4
    1890 7.0
    1900 6.0
    1910 9.2
    1920 10.5
    1930 14.6
    1940 7.1
    1950 7.9
    1960 10.3
    1970 24.0
    1980 28.7
    1990 32.9
    2000 22.1

  • doh, that list ends in 2000! This is 2009.....but any way I know that Chicago wants gun bands in all of Cook county and they have it in the city but are trying for the burbs....it is political and then it isn't...a real catch 22.

It is about being an American and our way of life, you can put blinders on if you want and that is your choice, you have that right as an American....my forefathers made sure you had that right!

Isn't our Coin collecting habits based on our American History! Our forefathers grace the obverse of all our coinage.

I think that is being reflected today. Forty percent of American's live on some form of Government dependency. If you are that 40%, sure, you think it's right to tax the "rich" more. And "rich" isn't what it use to be.

Fwiw I've voted for mostly 3rd party presidential candidates since Perot ran for President. It hasn't worked. Ron Paul was a worthy candidate this time and I would/should have voted for him except that I felt choosing betw Rep/Dem was more important this time than my "principles."

3- Previous generations worked long and hard to build up their communities, families and the whole of our economy... but then instilled in their children the notion that they could and should have a better life WITHOUT having to work for and earn it...(not everyone can be a "professional" or an "executive"...some folks actually have to do the work...) hence a new generation filled with folks who believe they are entitled... and looking to the government to provide whatever they want or need... But obviously there isn't more awareness and I'm really trying to be nice here.

The price of gold may well be reflective not only of economic uncertainty

but of the larger concerns over the governance of Nations.

    1. Our Nation is divided along political lines that make the ability
to achieve and overwhelming consensus most difficult.

    2. The lack of the former amakes it extremely difficult for any President
to lead effectively or efficiently, regardless of the appropriateness of their
    agenda.

    3. The power of lobbyist to influence all parties and regulatory boards as well
as the construction of legislation make it nearly impossible, to preserve and
protect the welfare of the people or the rational running of the Government.
These business and financial influences ,do not have the best interest of the
    Nation or its people.

    4. Bad legislation prevents the adequate and proper influx of resources to the
Government from entities, that avoid their fair share of the cost of running the
Nation. Further, bad legislation wastes money on issues that are more political
then they are necessary to efficient Government

    5. The ability and willingness of Government, of all parties, to lie, misrepresent,
withhold, distort, and otherwise mislead the public thru omission or commision.

For all of the above long term reasons and the evolving coming home to roost of
delayed and deferred resolution of long term issues. the price of gold must go up
as the last means , short of revolution , to force dicepline, reason and transparency
in the Governments of the world. It may fail, but their is always the hope, forlorn as
it may be for some improvement in world governance.
