Problem with that figure is the incredible amount of overlap that exists between registry sets nowadays. For instance, looking at one of the more well-heeled collector's sets:

He has over 500 registry sets listed, but for just 1966 Topps Baseball, he has a basic set, a master set, and 16 team sets. So 18 different sets which, in reality, are only one. When you then repeat this process for every year that Topps had a set (or at least 1952 through 1980 or so), you also can generate player sets for HOFers, semistars, and nobodies (Joe Jay basic set? Jim Davenport? Really?).

Now, start adding in what seem like arbitrary sets (1955-1964 Topps Decade of Athletics, 1961-1971 Topps Decade of Senators), and the very small rookie sets (Wade Boggs Rookie Set....a whopping three cards) and you can see that 50,000 sets is more the result of the new registry software than it is an influx in actual cards (and revenue).

    Seems a bit ridiculous.

I couldn't agree more with you, bobscards. With one exception.

Instead of "a bit ridiculous," I would change that to "utterly ridiculous."

I just checked my registry sets. I have 33 sets listed, however I actually have 15 original sets and the others are team sets of those years. Whatever the actual number the registry is still a big plus for PSA. No other company has a registry that even comes close to competing with PSA. The Registry is a great way to keep track of your cards, and it is free.

does that count retired sets? i will go on my annual tirade. retired cards could be on multiple other retired sets in addition a current set.

i have no use for retired sets. you took the money now get off of the registry list. it's like some 35 year old guy showing up at his old high school, nobody cares.

thanks for listening, i got to get back to my pepe frias set that i am building. (if you don't believe there is one you would be wrong.)

I also wonder how many of the 50,000 are redundant sets.

I have a faily modest collection and when I go to "add new set" I get more than 1,000 options -- from an inventory of about 500 cards.

That said, I am certainly a fan of the registry -- and thanks and congrats to PSA for making this part of the hobby.

I got the email the other day when I registered my future hall of fame coaches set. The first card I put in the set was Jim Zorn. I tried the future hall of fame GM's set but PSA would not let me add Matt Millen. I was going for 50001.

I don't do team sets, although if I started getting close to completion of sets, I'd register them to get the free gradings.

I've started more than 600 sets - primarily manufacturer-issued sets (I normally do the Master Set, but there are some where I have just the Basic Set and a couple where I have both Master and Basic Sets - this is mainly an artifact of Master Sets not having been created for many sets when I started registering my cards), with a sgnificant number of Player Sets, many of the Hall of Fame set possibilities, and a smattering of other sets (usually MLB award winners).

    I have 0 finished.

I got curious, so I just went into my registry and chose "Start New Set" to see how many sets I could start. I currently have only 44 sets. I was told that I could start an additional 935 sets. Of those 935 sets:

    317 would be at 100%
110 more would be at 90%+
72 more would be at 80%+
28 more would be at 70%+
23 more would be at 60%+

    etc.......

    Crazy.

That's a MINIMUM of 427 free grades. Sets over 150 cards would result in multiple free grades. It's possible that some of his free grades could be used to take other sets over the 90% mark (example: basic set over 90%, master set just under 90%, or vice versa).

Wow! I had no idea that was how it worked. I doubt any of those additional sets would be 150 cards (decade sets perhaps), but even at one per set, it might be worth it (although it feels like a ton of work).

On the other hand, I'm on record for expressing my disdain for this process. Hypocrite or registry zealot? image
