Braves sign Billy Wagner

Good aquisition imo. The scouts say his fastball is still electric even after surgery and if they lose Soriano or Gonzalez then they'll get draft pick considerations back from those deals. The Braves staff is gonna be one of the best in the majors next year if they can just find some more hitting.

    And the Red Sox don't mind loosing him, I believe he was a Type 1 FA, so the Sox will get some compensatory picks, yes?

    you are correct, but if the Braves lose Soriano or Gonzalez then they will get some picks as well. Win/win situation for the Braves to sign Wagner. Unless of course he gets re-injured, but he's always been a tough guy and his fastball is ridiculous when he's right.

    I hope he works out for the Braves. I think $7 million plus a first round draft pick is a generous salary for an aging closer that needs (or at least needed in 2009) lots of rest between appearances. Hopefully he'll be full strength in 2010 and that won't be necessary anymore.

    As for the Red Sox, I think he was an excellent pickup. He pitched very well for them in 2009 and they get the 1st round pick and a sandwich pick for losing him to the Braves.

    Has anyone heard if Soriano and Gonzalez have been classified as type A or type B free agents yet?

    They are both type 1, braves will pick up draft picks if they move elsewhere.

    nice pickup by the braves. if they solidify their offense they will contend for the division.

    Wagner, now Saito? Looks like the Braves will be donating a few draft picks to the Sox and getting them back when they loose Soriano & Gonzalez. Who closes for them next year? My guess Wagner will begin the season as the closer but will be on the shelf on & off so Saito will get more saves.

    Bobby said today that Wagner would be the main guy but that Saito would fill in for him when he'd worked a lot recently.

    It's always good to have two guys with closer experience, as long as they're not sniping at each other (which these guys won't.)
