That looks pretty cool! That seems like something that would come in handy, if I set up at shows I would look in to it for sure.
My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)
Does anyone else think that buyers might be fairly suspicious of this little gadget? I'd be really curious to know how they react, if anyone tries it out.
it is the kind of device used by unscrupelous waiters/waitresses to rip off customers when paying their dinner tabs - that is one of the reasons the $60 limit is put on it - think of it as a money govenor.
Sundry "Floor Limits" are assigned to each account.
Dorsey is the cofounder of Twitter. The device is designed to bring Point-Of-Sale (card present) credit card processing to the little folks. Just like PayPal did for online payments.
The tiny device is a full-feature POS terminal. It is not a storage reader. The scheme is just as safe as any other; safer than some.
This will be ideal for EBAY-sellers wishing to offer Local Pickup.
(I requested the application yesterday. Have not rcd it yet. I expect it to be EZ to qualify; most others are complex and restrictive. The audience is the general Twitter crowd, so the requirements have to be pretty low.)
In February 2009, Jim McKelvey wasn’t able to sell a piece of his glass art because he couldn’t accept a credit card as payment. Even though a majority of payments has moved to plastic cards, accepting payments from cards is still difficult, requiring long applications, expensive hardware, and an overly complex experience. Square was born a few days later right next to the old San Francisco US Mint.
Today the Square team is focused on bringing immediacy, transparency, and approachability to the world of payments: an inherently social interaction each of us participates in daily. We’re starting with a limited beta and rolling out to everyone in early 2010.
Square is backed by Khosla Ventures and a team of angels.

Actually there is a credit card swiper app that allows you to bill against a person cc. THis way no one needs to sign up for anything and everyone will already be at the show with a creid/debit card in their wallet. I would get that app before I tried something like this. It will be way more univeral.

There are TONS of apps that interface with a seller's existing Merchant Account platform.
The MA can be extremely difficult for MANY folks to qualify for. There are also substantial fees for the conventional MA.
The SquareUp account - a de facto MA - is FREE and their signup requirements are expected to be as liberal as those of PayPal. (Folks who have not been involved in credit-card fraud, should have no problem being approved.)
Buyers do NOT "sign-up" for SquareUp. The seller does. The buyer simply presents his credit/debit card to the seller and signs the screen with his finger or a stylus.

Currently, EBAY sellers - and card show sellers - cannot safely accept PayPal payments for local-pickup transactions, UNLESS the seller has a PayPal approved POS-terminal and a "card present" account. (Such accounts are expensive - whether they are used or not - and they are not easy for many sellers to obtain.)
SquareUp solves the local-pickup challenge.
Funds will be disbursed based on industry standards. There will be a brief holding period; the funds will then be moved into the seller's designated bank account.
America is the MOST backward developed country in the field of payment processing.
In Asia and Europe, consumers have DOZENS of payment options associated with their cellphones. The "Bump and Pay" concept is extremely popular among retailers and their customers.
Phones are preloaded with either a bank balance or a credit card. The customer enters a payment amount on their phone, and "bumps" the phone against the retailers' POS-terminal. The transaction is completed immediately and a printable receipt is emailed to the customer's phone. .................................

<< <i>I am actually going to set up at a show on the 12th. Have you used one of these? >>

I have not used it.
I was attracted to it because: "No contracts, monthly fees, or hidden costs."
And, it fits into a shirt pocket.
It appears to be set up along the lines of PayPal.

<< <i>I'm curious about the "0 to $60" blurb. Does that mean that it accepts only payments that are less than $60? Hope not. >>
I read that to be a reference to how fast and easy it is, nothing more.
