What is the best sleeper set?

To parallel Boey's thread, what do you think is the best sleeper set. You know, the one nobody talks about or collects, yet one day everyone will wake up and it will sizzle. Kind of like mint state IKEs, but what will be next.

My top nomination is modern gold commems in proof or mint state 69 or better. They are incredibly beautiful, they are gold, most have incredibly low mintages, they are fairly cheap, they are not that common in 69, and almost impossible in 70, they have a wonderful historic pedigree.

The real sleeper might be modern platinum commems any denomination in proof or mint state 69 or better. Beautiful, dramatic design, low mintages, platinum, and unlike Gold American Eagles, they all have different reverse designs.

Modern gold commemorative = beautiful? Are you talking about US coins or foreign coins? image

Perhaps clad Roosevelts? Hard to find in high grades. Today they are practically collected by no one.

  • I think one of the sleepers is Indian head cent proofs. These are beautiful coins with very small mintages in most cases and are very cheap except for three or four tougher dates.

I agree with Greg, modern roosies. Lots of trouble in the set with no mintmark coins and early dcams and very few people collect them. Same with proof jeffs, 50's dcams are fairly rare and very difficult in 68s and 69s. It's a fun place to collect real rarities without overspending.

  • I'm starting to look for 19'th Centry proofs. They are out there for sale. I guess there were many years proofs were made. Each year very few were made. For example in 1907 only 575 proofs of each denom. were made. If type collecting continues to pick up steam these beautiful coins should do well. Even considering there are lots of proofs if you don't care about year. So I hope Michael and billywls are right.

Nice SLQ T1 full head icon Don!! DCAM proof Jeffs from the 50s are rare. There are fewer of them then all other denoms from the 50s. There are none in 69 or 70 DCAM. In all years and grades there are 58 Jeff DCAMs from the 50s. I have 4. There are 5 years with less than 5 DCAMs in all grades ('51-4, '52-4, '53-1, '57-3, '58-3), I don't have any of those. (numbers from the Jan pop report.)

The funny thing about proof Jeffs is there is a good market for the highest graded ones, so those PR 68 DCAMs can bring many thousands. The very next level down there seems to be few buyers. For example a '56 in 68 DCAM might be worth $5K (certainly over $3K, Wonder what is your bid?) but one in 67 DCAM was sold for less than $1500. However a '53 in 67 Cam went for $230. Remember there is only 1 in DCAM in any grade and only 8 in 68 Cam. A '52 in 67 Cam goes for $250 but one in 68 Cam is over a grand (I'm $900 bid).

OK, now for my answer image I think the sleeper set is the next modern series that gets a new design. If it is Rooseys than I doubly agree with earlier suggestions, if it is Jeffersons I'm in great shape...
  • Way to go greg! Keep that Modern Commemorative Gold set a sleeper. That way I might finish upgrading my set before the cat is out of the bag. BTW, I also believe them to be beautiful. Keep collecting those foreign commem's.

I question whether there are any true sleepers left. A couple of years ago it was Ikes and maybe Kennedies. I also remember Washingtons were touted as being a sleeper series, but those days have come and gone.
Full Step Jeffersons used to be sleepers. Not anymore.
Mercuries? No, their popularity is raging.
Possibly Roosevelts, but the problem here is even in high grades the clads are not attractive (and large enough?) to draw in the crowd of Collectors required to make the set take off.
As it stands, I can't think of a series that is simply just waiting for the right move by the right collectors to really see some hugh gains.
I think the best bet is to focus on those sets that are popular, but haven't peeked yet.

  • How can any one suggest ANY modern is a "sleeper"???
Id consider the sleepers the unpopular series... IE half dimes, 3CN, 3CS, 2centers, Seated, Barbers and so on...
