As an owner of the BG-1011 50c round liberty in both PCGS MS-65 and MS-66 and the BG-1010 (1870) 50c round liberty in PCGS MS-67, I nearly fell off my chair when I inspected this lovely piece. It is so much nicer in person than these pictures.
To give you an idea of the condition rarity of this Cal fractional piece, there are only 2 MS-67 graded 50c round pieces in the entire Cal fractional gold series. Another poster here owns the only two MS-67 graded 50c octagonal in the entire Cal fractional gold series as well (BG-907 and BG-913).
Note: what appears to be scratches on both the obverse and reverse are actually on the plastic slab. This picture was taken by Bowers & Merena.

This photograph was taken a long time ago (2002?) with my Sony Maveca, a camera I adored. The floppy drive in it broke and I wonder where I can repair it.
I just had two cal fracs of my own out this weeked to get some pictures, a BG-799X (I think...) and BG-810.

i see signs of die rust on the obv which makes me think it was at
the end of its life while the rev was virtually new?

Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...

fc: I discussed the rusted die obverse with B&M. It was a fascinating discussion. We believe it was a prior year's die reused the following year as the obverse is not dated. As you may already know, most Cal fractional gold purists are disdainful of period 2 Cal fractional gold. Similar to classic coin collectors giving the eye roll when they see the modern coins getting slabbed.

Interesting, on the reverse in the fields it appears like circular machine marks like those made on a lathe. Were the dies for these pieces polished in a circular fashion?
