"But rarity alone does not seem to fully explain the prices the 1901-s coin realizes in the highest grades. Other Barber quarter dollars are as difficult to find in mint state as the 1901-s coin, yet, they sell for a fraction of the price. The 1901-s Barber quarter draws huge premiums compared with any of the other dates and mint marks in the series"

Could be overvalued, but without knowing the price of this particular coin, you can't say it's overpriced.

Indeed it is an assumption but I am 99.99% sure it is overpriced. I would love to be proved wrong. image

Really no coin is overpriced if there is a buyer at that certain price level!
  • Well, overpriced compared to what?

A few mintages were even smaller...the '13-S and '16. But this was a sleeper, like a '14-D Lincoln. They all seemed to go into circulation.

I would love to have this one. PCGS guide for a VF35 is $28k. That's a little too much of a Christmas bonus to myself.

What's that one Morgan Dollar proof from the 1890s.... think they made a few more of them than other years.... but for some reason they bring a bit of a premium.... image

Mid-grade circulated 1901-S Barber quarters, like the coin shown in the first post, have precious little in common with the AG3/G4 pieces found in holders and the AU58+ pieces likewise in holders. The mid-grade coins of this date are indeed bears. In this respect, the 1901-S is quite similar to the 1796 quarter.

Hmm. Could that be the 1895? What a coin... image

Indeed an 1898-s quarter is just as tough in Mint State, but it has almost a million minted.
With only 72,000 minted of the '01-s that changes things from the start.
A G-4 '01-s is over priced, but VF's are something.
Seated quarter guys will never cop to this, and for good reason, but the '01-s is kinda 20th Century magic.

I like that coin. The 01S is the only one I need for my set. I have all the other dates, but can stand to upgrade a few dates and mint marks.

In VF that coin is a monster, but it's not a monster in AU+ or G and below.
