The list of 25 semifinalists will be reduced by mail ballot to 15 modern-era candidates. That list increases to 17 finalist nominees with the inclusion of the two recommended candidates of the Hall of Fame’s Seniors Committee - Dick LeBeau and Floyd Little. LeBeau played 14 seasons (1959-1972) at cornerback for the Detroit Lions. Little, a running back played nine seasons (1967-1975) for the Denver Broncos.

The results of the modern-era reduction vote to 15 finalists will be announced on January 7, 2010.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s current ground rules stipulate that between four and seven new members will be selected each year. No more than five modern-era nominees can be elected in a given year and a class of six or seven enshrinees can only be achieved if one or both senior nominees are elected.

The Class of 2010 will be determined at the Selection Committee's annual meeting on Saturday, February 6, in South Florida the day before Super Bowl XLIV. The election results will be announced at 5 p.m. ET during a one-hour NFL Network special, live from the Super Bowl media headquarters.

  • Smith, Guy, Hayes, Sharpe, and Rice.

No disrespect to the other receivers and running backs, but Emmitt Smith should be the only running back to go in this year and Rice the only receiver.

WOW! What a list of GREAT players! I think you could make a valid argument either way for MANY of those guys, but there are three that stand out IMO ... would be REAL TOUGH (you'd have to hate the guy) to argue AGAINST EMMITT, RICE or GUY. If the HOF ever opens its doors to a true punter, NOW is the time!
    STAY HEALTHY!

I agree with the sentiment, but if the NBA couldn't find a way to induct Jordan all by himself then I doubt the NFL HOF voting committee will show that kind of respect for them (and the other inductees, who end up being overshadowed).

Wow, the responses thus far have not yielded much love for the defense.

Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith are no-brainers.

Ray Guy I am not familiar with, but I hear many good things.

But Tim Brown was a great as well. As was Chris Carter.

Chris Doleman, Kevin Greene, Charles Haley, and John Randall were simply dominant at their respective positions on a weekly basis.

Should make for a great election year.

    1. When Chuck Norris does a pushup, he isn't lifting himself up, he's pushing the Earth down

    3. There are no such things as lesbians, just women who have not yet met Chuck Norris
  • Seems it would be really hard picking just 5! my vote would be Rice,Smith,Dawson.Hayley and Guy. Would not want be a voter! It's the type of list you could keep changing your mind.

It won't surprise me if the Rice-Emmitt thing you guys mentioned actually happens. They might concentrate on giving the other spots to administrators and linemen from both side of the ball, leaving those two guys as the only ballhandlers in this year's class.

I think there are only 3 locks:

    Emmitt Smith
    Jerry Rice
    Ray Guy

The rest were all great players and are arguably HOFers, but aren't locks.

I think that type of sentiment is exactly the problem. The HOF process should only involve placing the most deserving players in first. No one questions that Cris Carter was not the receiver that Rice was, but they both are no question Hall of Famers. When someone else goes in should have no impact on another players induction.

    My picks:

    Emmitt Smith
    Jerry Rice
    Dick Lebeau
    Ray Guy
    Cris Carter
    Don Coryell
