Circulating coins

Today while I was out shopping and doing chores I decided to put into circulation a $25 roll of sacagewea dollars. At the gas station the attendant asked what these were and I told him they are $1 dollar coins, he said he never saw them before and had to ask the other attendant if he should take them and are they real.image Anyway needless to say he did take them but the expression on his face when I first handed them to him was priceless, he didnt have a clue.

Anyone else have a story to tell about putting coins into circulation(unordinary coins)

People love when I use $2 bills and they are usually set aside & removed from circulation.

They hate golden dollars. Often people complain they have no place to put them in the tray. Like I really care, lol.

They are ambivalent towards Kennedy halves.

Ikes are immediately exchanged for paper bills.
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

  • i recently spent 5 or 6 dollars in 2009 kennedy`s fresh from a roll in a convenience store and the cashier smiled and started looking through them. i got the impression he was going to keep them. when i left he still had them in his hand when usually cash goes straight in the till.

Coincidentally, I had a similar incident today at Starbucks with Sac dollars. The lady thought they were gold-plated quarters. Then I had to tell her they were dollar coins. She claims to have never seen them in her life...

Congratulations! At least they took them.
Many years ago, I tried to pass a roll of quarters at a gas station. They refused them. Beacause, all receipts of $10 denomination or more had to be put in the safe throuh a little envelope size slot and the roll of quarters would not fit through. Stupid me, I thought he might need them for change. Or he could open them up and push them through the slot.

I've been spending Ikes for the past 2 weeks and I have gotten some "What are these" and I have to ask the manager....

Next week it will be Kennedy halves. Went through 3 rolls found one 40% 1965.

The rest will be spent for paper and morning cafe.

    Good for you.
  • I spent a roll of half dimes last week. Got some interesting reactions.

Not really, but could you imagine? I'm sure people would call the police.
  • Hello,

I spent all the remainder of the Ikes I got in October. I finished spending some halves and got $20 more today. No silver, but I spend them and rarely get any questions.

The Ikes people liked and most of the time I get asked if the halves are dollar coins.

    Keep spending them....

I've never got thanked for spending a new dollar coin, they seem not to know where to put it in the drawer.

LOL.... yea with half dollars, they ask if it's a dollar. I feel like saying "yes that's why it says HALF DOLLAR!"

  • I never understand why the cashiers say they don't have a place for dollar coins. Every cash register has five change slots - cents, nickels, dimes, quarters, and one for coins like halves and dollars. There are also five slots for currency - ones, fives, tens, twenties, and one for fifties, hundreds or extra rolls of coins. There is always a space for dollar coins.

I spent $18 or so golden & SBA dollars at a fuel station a few days ago. Cashier complained about them stating she hates them b/c noone will accept them as change.

Last summer at a flea market type think I was spending JFK's. One lady said Thanks for the halves, You don't see these anymore.

Not long ago I was spending halves around as I just got done searching some boxes. Cashier @ Wendy's counted them as dollars instead of halves. I had to point out they were halves. I wonder why he didn't think it was strange I gave him $12 dollars for $5.75 meal.image

When I started cashiering in 1953, A silver dollar never slowed me down. I just tossed it in with the half dollars. Halves were always few in number. We didn't stock up on them for change. We just had what customers gave us and we would give them out again. When I started, our store reserved the second bill slot for two dollar bills. We alaso stuck miscellaneous stuff in there such as coupons and our tally sheet. Twenties and higher, we put in the wooden drawer under the metal cash tray. After a $50 almost complete disappeared in a crack there, I started putting twenties in the two's slot. Soon everybody followed suit until a guy transferred in from another store and started giving 20's out as 5's in change.

The DC Metro farecard machines dispense Dollar coins as change- last time I was there I received an SBA, a Sac, and 2 different Presidents in 1 transaction!
