Take a look at these two PCGS xf45 50c seated libertys....

PCGS graded the coin as XF45.

Do you think it's overgraded?

Is this year graded differently from others?

I would have purchased it right away but I think it's no way near an xf45.

1839obv
1839rev

Now take a look at this 1843-o pcgs graded xf45

undergraded in my opinion.

1843oob
1843orev

There's at least 2 or 3 grades difference between these two coins.

I am equally skeptical of the grade on this piece.

Id like it closer to VF, imo. It looks cleanded too. I'm amazed that it's not in a Genuine holder. Wouldn't want it. (NEN, the one dealer i avoid like the plauge, is not know for PQ offerings either)

I agree with your coin opinion,

I however have had good experiences with NEN.

The 1839 might actually has wear consistent with an EF, but it has zero eye appeal and is an awful piece, in my opinion.

    Yes, I agree that the 39 is over-graded, more like a 35, 40 max.

The 43-O, on the other hand, is correctly graded I think. It has at least AU 50 details, but does not have the luster to merit the AU designation.

Ditto what Tom said. There is nothing appealing to the 1839 and I'm surprised it graded at all. Looks cleaned.

The 1843 has AU details but I think its muted luster hurt it.

Will may be right about the strike. But it doesn't change my feeling about poor eye appeal.

I agree the '43 is graded right. Its details are great, but the luster isn't quite there by the looks of the picture. It's a nice looking solid coin, and looks in every way desirable. The '39 is dreadful. That's about as far from original-looking as a coin can get. It might pass with XF40 details, but -- gag me! I would not want it.

I would not venture to grade either of those coins with the low quality of the images provided. But if I were to choose from the two I would purchase the 1843 first with your money.
And it is priced about right too. Found it.image

I looked at the 1839 on the dealers site. This is not a eye appealing coin.

The 1839 is horrible, and getting into a holder strikes me as a gift.
    The 1843 looks accurate.
    When in doubt, don't.

Run, repeat, run, from that 1839. Here is my 39 for comparison, aslo XF45 ,which I am still groveling over but I have made some good progress with my therapist over this issue.

The 1839 is either a crappy coin or a crappy picture of a coin that still seems overgraded, anyway.
  • No doubt the top coin is not of the highest quality, and the bottom coin is quite nice indeed, probably AU if it has any luster remaining.

Disagree completely. I've had many more quality purchases from NEN then from most dealers praised on here. This is also the first I can remember hearing anyone bash NEN in general. They go through a LOT of inventory, it only makes sense that they will have some below average pieces but usually their pricing reflects it.

Remember grading is just an opinion. The first coin does look XF to me. Dont grade your coins based on 1 other in the same grade...what if that one is really an AU?
