Michigan State Show Report

I just got back from Dearborn show and must say one of the better crowds I have seen. I had to deliver a big coin collection for a friend at work and had to pick my way thru the aisles with the case on rollers. The parking lot was packed when I left. There was another event as well but there generally is as I recall from other years. There also seemed to be more people coming in when I got ther - you can spot the coin guys.

I saw multiple people at many of the tables and often had to wait to say hello. I just got the feeling that people were there to try to buy. On the stuff I took a VF20 92-O Barber Half sold for full retail before I left. I have company this weekend so could not stay as long as would have liked.

I swung thru the exhibits but most were not setup as yet.

It will be interesting to see later reports.

As for me I checked out the copper guys and picked up an 1854 N4 re-punched Late date from Tom Reynolds AU50+/45+ due to a rim ding. The color was really nice and the re-punch was relatively decent on a late die state a.

Wed. I got a neat 1850 1/cent struck thru grease from Shawn Yancey.

This is always one of the best attended shows in the country. I will be going tomorrow.
    All glory is fleeting.
  • I went today as well.
I live North of Muskegon on the other side of the State so it's a 3 1/2 hour drive each way for me.
The first thing that struck me as I entered the main bourse was the loud noise. This has been missing the last 2 or 3 shows.
The loud noise and the hustle and bustle of deals going down shows that the coin market is indeed coming back strong.
I've seen the fall Michigan State show so crowded in years past you had to fight to make your way down the aisles, and it wasn't like that today, but it was better than it's been in quite a while.
All the dealers I spoke with said this was becoming a good show for them.
I didn't buy anything, but I enjoyed my time talking with old dealer friends and collectors.
I took a coin with me I wanted an opinion on and had some dealers I respect look at it.
I also spotted a R-7 coin unattributed and didn't buy it. I am getting older and don't trust my memory anymore. I made notes at the show, and when I got home took out my books and notes and confirmed it. I know the dealer, and if it doesn't get sold over the weekend, I'll buy it from them next week.
There's a new grading service that was set up there.....MMNS. They have a new holder that will be available in January that shows the outside edge of the coin.
It's like using a flashlight reflector and putting a coin in as you see the reeded edge of the coin as a ring around the outside as you look at it.
They said they have a patent on it.
Maybe they do for using the concept in a slab, but this knowledge has been used for counting reeds for 20 or more years that I know of.
I don't believe PCGS and NGC have a lot to worry about with this startup though.
    Slabbing companies come and go.
The Michigan State show is a good show, and anyone within driving distance ought to try to make it.
    Edited:
By the way, if any of you saw an old guy with white hair wearing a US Navy issue light blue work shirt with US Navy over the left pocket at the show, that was me.
My son is a submariner aboard the USS Toledo. He left some of his military uniforms at home a couple years ago. Once in a while I get where I kinda miss him, and put on one of his shirts. We were always real close.

Thanks for those show reports JoeCopper and Ray. Nice to see some hustle and bustle coming back. The White Plains, NY show showed some hustle as well today. But I wasn't convinced that Joe Public was doing most of the hustling.

The show was VERY well attended and tons of buzz. Lot's off people wheeling around cases of coins.

I ran into Wei (WTCG) in front of the Heritage booth. Great chat. He said to be on the lookout for Mad Marty. No sighting of a dude with a big head peeing in the corner.

Lot's of people trying to sell generic silver and lot of dealers we relunctant to buy at todays prices. However, silver and gold generics were selling at todays prices to the public. This mornings Dubai event did spook a few folks.

It must of been a show rule that you had to have a 100oz silver bar in your display case. They were everywhere,

I went looking for commems and walkers and came come with my first type coins and I'm SO excited.

    I bought the following:

    1858 PCGS MS64 Seated Quarter
1804 NGC Spike Chin MS 63 RB half cent (old holder)
1840 NGC MS63 Small Letters Seated Half
    1835 NGC MS63 JR-8 Bust Dime ( old holder)
    1805 NGC F15 * B-2 R-3 Draped Bust Quart(old holder/ (yes a star*) sick eye appeal
    1909 PCGS VBD MS66RD
1940 NGC 67* Walking Liberty Half
    1861-65 F-630k-5B T. Brimelow, Druggist MS64 Token
1863 Civil War Token MS 64 RB Liberty-Our Army

I was at the show on Friday. Like it has always been, the show was extremely crowded and at times it was difficult to get around in the aisles though the room did sort of empty out by the mid afternoon. Some dealers reported a lot of lookers and a lot of questions but slow sales while many dealers reported good levels of retail sales although most agree that it was the less expensive items that were selling well.

There was interest in bullion coins although buyers were mostly interested in purchasing small quantities.

Saturday's attendance appeared to be very solid. I was told that dealer to dealer business on Friday was strong but retail business was nothing special.

My search for Irish 1 Pound notes for my formerly "secret" collection was a total failure. Several foreign paper money dealers appeared to be missing from the bourse this year.

My only purchase was a 2009 silver Christmas round from Silvertowne for all of $19.00.

    All glory is fleeting.
  • I showed up about 2:00 or so today. Crowd was not as heavy as I remember the last few years, however, I usually attended in the mornings on Friday.

I was primarily just selling, which I honestly did not have much problem with. Took a hit a one of my IHC's that did not fit my collection any longer, but did well enough on the other IHC's to more then compensate. Sold about $20 face of heavily circ'd walkers, and a couple of Bust Half Dimes, as with the IHC's, I had no problems moving them as well.

Not much interest in five of the Walkers that I just could not let go at melt. Instead I just randomly chose 5 kids and gave them each one. The last one went to a nice young kid wearing a blue stage vest. I asked him something like, what do you know about Walkers, his response was something like Ohh I like them but I don't own one, I flipped a well worn 21S, and said here you go, 1921 is the tough year. I walked away as he was saying thanks, with a big smile on his face. I hope he keeps it for a while:-)

I brought my new girlfriend with me, it was her first show. So we spent most of our time in the exhibit area, showing her and explaining the contents of many of the displays. I noticed she was eyeing the gold just a little to hard, with a little smirking smile on her face. I quickly made the mentle note to keep her away from the as many of the Gold dealers as I could. I got lucky this time boys.

Curious, do you have the 1 Punt proof coin and note set issued by the Central Bank of Ireland? THe coin is dated 1990 and the note is dated 1989 in my set.

Show Report from two of my favorite dealers. MJ

    Coin Market Report
    MSNS - November 2009

One of our old favorite shows held in Dearborn Michigan. The Michigan State Numismatic Society hosts two shows annually, one in the Spring and this show in the Fall. We have attended this show for over 20 years and have made many good friends. Since the economy in Michigan is suffering currently we were not sure what would happen. Would we see a repeat of Baltimore where everyone only wanted to talk gold? Or would we see a vast empty bourse floor. To our surprise we found a bourse that was so jammed with people that you had to wait at almost every table as there were people in front of you! In addition to this the folks came out to buy coins not bullion but real coins! Our table was always active and old friends stopped by to both purchase a new treasure and say "hi".

So what was selling you ask? The hot item was clearly coins that were beautiful and above average especially early US Type. If you check our web site you will see that many pieces are no longer available as they were purchased by a vibrant numismatic public the likes of which we have not seen in many years. Phil and I would take turns scouring the floor for anything that we felt was spectacular and we did purchase a number of pieces. With the Houston Money show looming on the very near horizon we probably will not have them up prior but we will try our best so be sure to check the site daily. Many of these items will disappear in Houston and if you see anything that sparks an interest please give us a call.

Thanks for the reports, folks. I heard from several dealer friends that this year's show was packed and that lots of buying & selling was going on. Sounds like that indeed was the case.
