OTT Lamp Question

A retailer is selling these as part of skullbusting deals tomorrow morning. $20 for what they are saying is a $55 regular price, but $30 all day on Amazon. I've read a lot of OTT fans are on here and use 2 of these for their lighting set-up, or similar. Any opinion on if 2 of these would do the trick? My initial thought is that snakeneck design would work better, but 2 of these at $40 sounds good as well. The retailer is JoAnne fabrics.

do a search on "ott light" and you will find A TON of posts on the subject. Sounds like a good deal but Joanne Fabric often runs sales like this.
  • I like to use 3 lamps. One overhead and one each R and L.
That's been my best setup so far.
    Sounds like a good deal.

  • Ugg after reading pages of OTT posts it sounds like the compact fluorescent bulbs, the ones I refuse to use in my living room cause of the minor buzz and non-warm light, are the ones I should try in my already owned goose-neck lamps. Thanks gents! gobble!

Obviously it depends on your taste and what you're using it for.

For what it's worth, I really like my OTT lamp with built in magnifier for examining coins.

I don't like them at all. Not even close to the results I get with halogen.

I like the ott lights better because they provide a more even lighting with their long bulb. Point lighting gives you more light and dark areas which is fine if you're artistic and willing to move them around a lot to get a perfect shot. I like to shot a lot of coins in a hurry. The actual frequency spectrum of the light doesn't matter much if your camera does custom white balance. The good thing about ott is that it matches natural sunlight well so since I photograph in my bedroom and sometimes have some natural lighting, the white balance doesn't change.

This looks like a good price. I may pick up another one. Sometimes I wish I had a 3rd one to light the coin more evenly....usually 2 is fine.

I like them because they are cool. Any light can work (ie:halogen) but they burn hot.
