Is this 1825 Quarter a B-1?? Situation resolved :-)

dohdoh Posts: 6,457 ✭✭✭
Yes, it's in a PCGS holder and yes the holder is marked Browning 1, but I just wanted to double check with the experts as I've heard of this variety being misattributed in TPG holders. Sorry for the iffy pics, if better ones are needed, let me know. Thank you.

Edited to add: Many have chimed in and agreed that this is, in fact, an 1825 B-1 Quarter. However, I cannot add it to the CBQ w/varieties registry, because it's not the right coin number. I've entered it into the Registry, but since it has the wrong coin number, it won't put it in the set. It says, "Browning 1" and shows the correct date of the coin, but then it shows a different population...so what am I doing wrong? How many types of B-1 are there and/or why is PCGS using different coin numbers????

Edited again: I called customer service about an hour ago...told them the situation and was told to "check back in like half an hour." Well, amazingly, my coin - with the coin # that's NOT 5337 - is now in the CBQ with varieties set. It looks like they just removed the coin number from the B-1 slot since, apparently, there are two coin numbers for the 1825 B-1. Weird. Either way, it's in the set. Doesn't really matter...I was in 6th place before the B-1 and I'm in 6th place after the B-1. image

<< <i>I can't help witht he attribution but I know for a fact pcgs screws up majorly on the attributions >>

I hear ya, that's why I'm posting it. I've compared it with my B-2 and there are clearly differences in the date and 25 C. on the reverse. I've also compared it with a recently posted B-1 and it looks the same...so let's hope the experts agree.

In this case they have it right. It is a B-1.

    Is this 1825 Quarter a B-1??

    Yes.

Some of the tell tale indicators for both the obverse and reverse of the 1825 B-1 are the following:

    Obv:
    1. The 5 in the date is under the curl.
    2. Star 13 (the lowest star on the right) points to the back of the hair curls.
    3. Star 8 (the highest star on the right) is positioned high on the back of the cap and points to a peak where the cap folds.

    Rev:
    1. There is a die scratch (from when Christian Gobrecht worked on this die and completed the lower arrowhead from where it had broken off of the master die) from the lower edge of the lowest arrowhead that points back towards the stem of the olive branch.
    2. The numerals in the denomination are even with each other at their bases.
    3. The I in PLURIBUS is centered under the left side of the 2nd T in STATES.

Looks like a nice no problem VF+ example. image

<< <i>was this same reverse used with the 1824/2 obv? >>

    Yes.

It was also the same reverse used on the 1823/2 (but as I stated earlier, repaired by Gobrecht after that use).

The last use of this reverse was on the 1828 B-2 (another scarce R-4).

I have an 1831 Large Letters B-5 mislabeled by PCGS as a Small Letters so mistakes can happen with the varieties.
