Is this 32-S Washington Authentic?

This coin has been harshly cleaned and I do not want it. I would like to put it on ebay. However, I do not want to sell it if it is not authentic. Anyone have any opinions? It's really a shame someone took a brillo pad to it if it's real.

  • It looks real, definitely, and I think the cleaning makes it look kind of fake.

  • I think it looks okay, the "2" in the date on those has a way of looking kind of bogus but it's just the way they were struck.

  • Yes. The S is correct and looks like it sits a bit in a valley.

It might be too much of a headache for you, but have you thought of slabbing the Quarter in either ANACS or PCGS Genuine? The extra profit might make it worth your while ...

Be sure and take very blurry pictures of it when you list on eBay otherwise people will see it for what it is.

  • Did someone start carving their initials in it also?

I hope you're joking. I list all my coins accurately and with as good of pics as I can. I'm not out to rip anyone off at all.

I thought about it, maybe I'll send it in on the CC special. IIRC it's any coin with a bird on it right now. With a coin this harshly cleaned I don't know if it would do much good though.

I don't see this, where on the coin are you seeing this?

Yes, I know it's a crappy coin, but it's a key date hole filler that should go cheap for someone interested.

    Yes I am.
It just irks me that coins such as this remain in the hobby and collectors spend their hard earned money on them. It is my opinion that the hobby would benifet if they were destroyed as in many cases people think they have the same value as a problem free coin when getting them especially on eBay.

Then you should buy them and destroy them. image Seriously, I can see where it would be a problem for someone to sell a coin like this as problem free to an unsuspecting/stupid buyer, but I do not see the problem with selling a damaged coin as long as it's properly described and pictured. I usually start all my auctions at $0.99 and let the bidders decide the value. If someone wants a 32-S to fill a hole and the best they can afford is this coin for $20 or $30, which is all I feel it's worth, who are we to decide for them it isn't worth it? Caveat emptor and all that rot. I don't think it's up to anyone to protect another from themselves. It's not as if it's a platinum plated state quarter set being huckstered to grandma on the coin vault.

I would say that it's authentic. The mint mark looks okay.

.......at the risk of sounding cruel, it should be a responsible BUYER bidding on an auction with a coin that MIGHT be
questionable. it's not anyones fault if someone doesn't research the coin before pulling the trigger. you have to be responsible! one really shouldn't be unsuspecting. jmo

My advice is to tell it like it is. You're not hoping for much. Let the market decide.

    I think you're pretty smart.

Not everybody can afford problem free coins. Did you maybe not consider that such a coin could be the one that fills the final hole in a set put together by a collector of limited means and represent their own personal crowning achievement? Destroy these coins and deny someone that sense of accomplishment, just because you don't like the kind of coins they would choose to collect? Seems kind of mean to me.

Destroying coins would only destroy a part of history.......These coins are what they are because they were used (some alot!) in the daily life of the times.....that's what history is all about.

Think about it: Uncirculated coins were minted, then just sat in a bag their whole 'life', until some collector puts it in a box. They never bacame a part of American life in any real way.

Nothing wrong w/ MS coins......but I think the "hobby" tends to "value" collecting more than at just a technical level.......

  • Definitely real. Also agree with what others have said, to wit, when you sell it on the Bay, picture and describe it accurately, and let the market set the value. That is, after all, its raison d'etre.

If you have any doubt regarding Authenticity and don't want to pay for a professional opinion,

list it on ebay described to the best of your ability and declare it an "as is"/ "Estate sale" listing.

Describe it as being harshly cleaned and that you cannot make ANY guarantees!

If it IS Genuine or Authentic it would bring more certified accordingly.

What makes you doubt whether it's real or counterfeit?

Here's a thread about a problem coin. Should it be destroyed, too?

    Just wondering...

There's really no need to destroy a perfectly good semi key coin. Someone could carry this around in their pocket for a couple years and most if not all the cleaning damage would be gone.Of course, that also means it will lose a few grading points..But who cares about points
