Lets evaluate the YN concept 5 years later.

How the YN was born

So I have modern PCGS Lincoln Cent in MS 64 that is not worth selling so I figure, "I will give it to a YN!" First thing I do is look through various basic Lincoln sets for those designated YN and see who is missing the cent I have...What a shock. Most had at least MS 66 graded coins. Many had MS 67 and 68 or to be blunt, better coins than I own. Next I look at who is collecting what sets. Another shock. One has more sets than I could count, another has sets that included gold, 1936 proof sets, etc. Now granted, many here have far more cash than I do, but the sets I saw just smell bad to me. Of the one possible kid I found that looked like a YN (and had a collection of what I expect a YN to have) had no contact info. The rest in my opinion were folks claiming their 4 year olds were avid collectors or looking as the early thread said, to cheat someone.

So what is your opinion 5 years later? Is the YN concept working or does ole Water Sport need a soak in cold ocean water.

    Bob,
This is an excellent topic for the Set Registry forum where many people who don't visit the Coin Forum daily will see it and comment. I suggest you repost on that forum.

  • I don't see why a YN can't have a set/coin that's better than yours? Or sets that exceed your expectations by a large margin?

I'm a YN, I've collected gold. I've collected classic proof coins. I don't see what the problem is.

Geez, classic proof gold, I find that simply amazing. Well more power to you, but while you are absolutely right, there is nothing wrong with having a better registry set than my own, I still have the impression that a YN should be struggling collector of low end coins like I was at 13. My how things have changed....I guess.

So at what age do you define a YN? younger than 20? 30?
    "It is what it is."

Not classic proof gold, but "classic proofs" and "gold"

Anyways, you are correct. That's the impression all too often. Coin dealers often look down on younger collectors coming to their tables at coin shows because they think kids don't have money.

The type of YN you are thinking about helping are not likely to be found with sets in the PCGS registry!

It's a great idea but probably the wrong venue to search for deserving youngsters.
