This is one of the MOST AMAZING ERRORS I've Ever Seen!!!!

I mentioned this error that I bought at the Santa Clara show on another thread, and I just received photos hot off the press from Todd Pollock! It's a 1999 Lincoln cent obverse die cap with a stack of NINE Lincoln cents that each got stuck and melded onto each other around the obverse die. The obverse of the actual coin at the bottom of this "cup" is extremely well struck since it was stamped so many times. The consensus is that it was most likely "smuggled" out of the mint by a mint executive. It was graded by NGC as MS67 but, of course, they couldn't put it in a holder. Whatcha all think?

<< <i>That is a killer obverse. Why is the color wrong? Almost looks like a 1974 aluminum cent. >>
Zink showing through....
Hoard the keys.
Thanks for sharing!

Nice error, though.

More likely a mint employee's orifice... have you sniffed it

The only better "tulip" error I have ever seen was on the desk of the Denver Mint Superintendent, sealed in a clear plastic box, and NOT for sale!!!!!

Good point, I should add, this one is NOT for sale either

How stable is the connection between the different coins? I mean, is it fragile such that if it were accidently dropped would all the coins separate?

Way, way cool IMO.
Great pics of the error BTW. Congrats to Charmy on the acquistion and to Todd Pollock for the pictures.

I saw that on ebay and it is a strange error. I was surprised to see another one here. Its a little expensive the one on ebay. How much do you think they are worth?

What tbarreca said.
I'm not much into errors and varieties, but that is indeed truly amazing, and very cool.
Seems those could be enclosed in some sort of little clear boxlike slabby thing, with space for the label. Of course that would take much of the fun out of handling them.

I'm talking the stuff that stops the presses because of a large pounded together mass of metal?
I bet the mechanics that service the machines have seen some real dozzies,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Why not MS66 or MS68??
<< <i>That is totally cool and is one of the most amazing errors I have seen also. Just curious though (and not trying to take away anything from the error...just an educational question) how would the grading service arrive at MS67? The obverse looks decent minus the copper but the reverse is totally hacked. >>
The "hackedness" of the reverse looks like patches where the copper plating split off the planchet, made odder by the warped details from the odd striking. That's all mint-made and the nature of an error, as opposed to the coin having lots of marks from after the minting process.
........can that be slabbed?

Nine coins...very cool. The only one larger I have seen was the piece that graced the cover of an old Bowers and Merena Rare Coin Review. IIRC it was a 17 coin "flower."

great error. Funny how the OP and the eBay linked coins are both 1999 year models.
Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.
Who says they don't make large cents any longer. That's three times
the size and twice the weight of one.
Thanks for letting me see that in person! Great error. Todd was busy all day but he took some great photos of loads of great coins including a fantastic job on this error!
While it isn't exactly my cup of tea, if you put tea in it you could have a cuppa.
