SP63BC grade.....

What does the grade SP63BC on a 1875-S Branch Mint Proof 20C stand for? I get SP is Specimen, what is BC?

I've only seen PR63BM, meaning Branch Mint.

Where did you see this? Who graded it SP63BC? This is intriguing...I've not seen this either.

I saw it in the PCGS registry.

Any chance they are limited to 5 letters, are out of space, and the C is a shortened CA for cameo?

The designation SP stands for specimen striking or special striking. For example pcgs used to designate the 1921 zerbe proof morgan dollars as PR but they have now downgraded this to SP because of the controversy over this coin being a proof or not. So now those with the big bucks that want to build a registry set of morgan proofs do not include the 1921 zerbe because it is an SP and not a PR anymore. pcgs also used this same designation SP on the 1927 matte or satin finish proof nickels which were obvious proofs. Imagine the uproar if they had called them proofs, why all those with their poptop buffalo nickel proof sets would now have an incomplete set!! And since aspiring to complete a set that cannot be completed such as the 1892 - 1918 barber dimes (only 24 1894-s made) discourgages people from attempting to complete the sets, it is in pcgs best interest to use the term SP instead of PR. SP decouples the coin in question from the regular proofs. Very smart marketing.

Possibly, but the "Branch Mint" would be somewhat redundant since the coin is labeled as 1875-S, indicating a Branch Mint strike.

    Thanks...

Don, David, or any PCGS graders...why the "BC" designation?

I read, or was told, that an SP is a single strike, not a multiple one as with a real proof. Is this correct?

I do believe it is a Branch Mint Proof Cameo. PCGS Coin number 5307 is for a regular Branch Mint Proof (BM) and 85307 is for the Cameo Branch Mint Proof (BC).

Thanks Paul, that makes sense. It must be one sweet coin.

That's correct. I found the following for 1875-S 20c pieces on the Coinfacts site:

"The finest Proof Branch Mint example graded by PCGS is a single PRBM-62.

The finest Proof Branch Mint Cameo example graded by PCGS is a single PRBC-64."
