I've seen them lightly tone in the mint tubes but since they were not purchased in the monster boxes, I don't know how they'd been handled in the past.
I have a green top tube of ASE's that was in a poorly maintained safe for roughly 9 years. By poorly maintained I mean it was never opened and no desiccant was added. It got pretty funky in there. For example, the wooden grips on a S&W Model 60 rotted a little bit. The top (which happened to be the obverse) and sides of the top ASE took a very nice rainbow tone but nothing else did.

<< <i>so far none of mine have toned in tubes >>
Me too.
not tone for over 20 years.
poor storage methods cause toning. those plastic tubes are awesome in my mind for keeping air out.
