So, what is really causing the increase in price/value of the proof SAEs?

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,556 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm sure most of us have seen the price/value of the SAE proofs go up over the last 6-12 months....pretty good %-wise if you ask me.
Now, some may think it is the price of silver but I don't think so. There was already a premium over spot silver price and the increase has been more than what spot has increased.

So, is it IRAs? Gold, I could see, but silver proof SAEs for this?

Just curious. I may end up selling some and putting the cash into the GET for my son's college fund before it goes up again (already announced a double-digit increase is coming) and, as I look at this, I just don't see a REAL reason for the increase.

The increases were already occuring before the announcement of the 2009 proof SAEs being sh$&canned.

All I know is that the last show I did and the weeks Proir to that show, Dealers were paying 45 bucks a shot for common dates and buying all I had , no questions asked. Could be a home shopping club sort of thing.

Since the production figures for the proof ASE's are all relatively small, any slight shift in demand can cause a big fluctuation in price (evidently). As far as WHY the big increase in demand all of a sudden, you're guess is as good as mine, I suppose. To me it just feels like a bubble, in which case I wouldn't want to own any of common proof ASE's at these levels. However, relatively speaking, all of the low-mintage years (esp. 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1997) are now all INCREDIBLY CHEAP compared to their common-date counterparts. That tells you that whoever is pumping the proof ASE's is definitely NOT promoting complete sets (for whatever reason). Otherwise, all of the aforementioned scarcer dates would undoubtedly have been bid up significantly higher by now.

Is it as simple as they did not mint them this year and everyone is panicking (hoarding) them?

I've always known that SAE proofs are awesome and now a bunch of rich folks have figured it out too. Keep buying, I'm contemplating my sell target threshold!

There's a greater collector base driving the market upward in a time when other precious metals start to float other numismatic boats.
