Grade opinions wanted- 1927 Peace Dollar- Update: Grade posted

The obverse has some scratches between the letters E and R and there are a few good hits elsewhere on the coin, so will it grade and if so what is the grade? Thanks in advance.

Update: Slab photo (MS64) posted bottom of the page.

She's pretty and almost big enough for me to see, so I'll go with MS64!

Hmmmm Seem to be having technical difficulties.
I was trying to say that I see no reason it shouldn't grade.
64 is as good a guess as any.
  • Looks nice, maybe even a 65. I think at a regular image size the contact marks would not be noticeable. Good coin!

It will grade, but I'm a bit grouchy so will only give it a 63.

Buffalode: Your 1927 Peace Dollar seems like an attractive eye-appealing coin from the photos provided. It's always tough (and usually inaccurate) to try and grade from photos, but it can be entertaining.

There's something about the numerous light hairline scratches on the obverse of your coin that makes me think super-slider AU-58. I would guess that coin is either an AU-58 or a high-end MS-63 (shot 64).

It all depends on how the coin appears in hand, and how the grader interprets the hairline scratches. Either way it appears to be a very attractive 1927 Peace Dollar. Thanks for sharing and Congrats! image

    62.

PCGS hates hairlines on Peace Dollars. Probably not enough to bag the coin, though.
  • Thanks everyone for your input. I found this coin in an antique shop last week while searching for a gift for a friend in the hospital. I had never been there before, they only had a total of 4 coins for sale counting this one, and I think I got a pretty good deal on it. The photos (sorry about the oversize pics by the way) really emphasized every mark on the coin, it looks pretty nice in hand.

The obverse hairlines look fairly minimal, even in those large pictures. Unless there are other flaws not apparent in the images, I can't see the coin grading lower than MS63, and think it has a very good chance at an MS64.
  • My grading ability started out lousy... and appears to continue to decline. (I'd have guessed AU58 max.) Sigh.
  • I think 63 is generous. I'd buy it as a 62, probably, but wouldn't decide from these pics. I don't see any rub, but the hairlines are a bit scary.

I agree. I have seen plenty of MS64's in similar condition. PCGS is grumpy these days so my guess would be MS63.

The hairlines seem minor but I'd give it a good hard look with a loupe, particularly the obverse, and then decide if it's worth grading. If it's a $200 coin do you really want to spend $40 to slab it?

I would have to agree with 63. However, I would like to see this one in hand.

I have very little experience with Peace dollars, since this is only the second one I have bought. I was concerned that the coin would not grade due to the scratches. After reading all the comments here I think I probably will send it in for grading. I will be sending some other coins to PCGS in the next week or so anyways, so at least I wouldn't have the expense of shipping just this one coin. I paid $38 for this coin and don't expect to be selling it, but I would like to see what grade PCGS gives it. As has been said, it is really hard to grade from photos and I just don't know enough about grading these, so maybe it would be a good learning experience also.

  • you captured the luster in the pcgs holder better than the raw photo. I collect these and the 27 typically comes with very little luster. I have never seen one with mint bloom above the forehead.
