mintmark over mintmark question

Were coins that have a mintmark over mintmark always produced at the mint which has the mintmark on top? e.g. was the 1938-D/S nickel minted in Denver, not San Francisco? And has there every been a coin where the mintmark overliad was where the coin was minted?

i think your question is - has there been coins minted at both mints with the mintmark overtop the other one

by looking in the Red Book & Cherrypickers Guide - they show a few

    Lincolns - 1944 D/S , 1946 S/D, 1951 D/S, 1952 D/S

    Jeffersons - 1949 D/S, 1954 S/D, 1955 D/S

there might be others ??? this is from a quick look in these books

No, the question is what it is.

And yes, the primary mintmark is the mint of manufacture. The referenced buffalo nickel was produced in Denver.

Help me out so I do not pass on misinformation.

Did Philadelphia apply the mintmarks prior to shipping the dies to the branch mints or did the branck mints apply their own mint marks?

I've seen photos of those in coppercoins books and always wondered how and why this would happen. Why would anyone place a D over an S or an S over a D? Are those Mint workers trying to make extra money claiming they made more coins?
Now that brings up just how many Phily Lincoln Cents have an S or D added? So then how come there are no D/ or S/ coins? If there are sure would be a tuff one to see.

No. All dies were produced and mintmarked in the engraving department at the Philadelphia Mint. No branch mint was authorized to add their own mintmarks until the last 20 yrs.
