Looking for John J. Pittman Catalog - October 97 Sale - Seated Dimes

I would be most grateful for help in locating an auction catalog from the John J. Pittman sale, October 1997 by David Akers. Pittman's seated dimes are of interest for tracking provenance into today's leading collections. Any leads or guidance would be appreciated.

i agree that contacting Karl Moulton (firstmint) would be a great first step

Bryce (PreTurb) might also be of assistance

If you contact David Akers, I believe you may find that hard bound copies of the sale are still available. I could contact J.J.P.'s daughter and ask for you if that doesn't work.

  • The three Pittman sale catalogues are in constant demand, and bring good money when available. A hardbound set has sold for over $1,000 at auction a few years ago.

Like I have to tell many people who later want one, I don't have any available at present. None are available from Akers either (edited to add - at least that's what was mentioned on ebay when the last set of HB's was offered a little over a year ago).

Just keep looking around and checking with the lit dealers and good luck.

What's the going rate for the complete, 3 vol. softbound set?

I have the set and, like Realone, I would be happy to look up some lots for you.

Depends on condition, among other factors. A softbound set in Near Mint / Mint would probably be a minimum of $100.

Bryce, PM sent. Thanks for quick reply.

To the rest of CU folks, thank you for the advice and information. I plan to add the Pittman Seated Dime Collection into the Historical Collections module at www.seateddimevarieties.com. The catalog was critical for enabling that effort.

  • Hi Gerry!!

Looks like you found one. If it doesn't work, let me know, I've been giving some thought to selling my 3-piece set (soft bound).

I managed to purchase a signed very low numbered hardbound set 3 years ago off one of David Akers editors on the Pittman catalog project, and feel this may have been the most expensive reference set I've purchased... the Harry Bass hardbound set was a close second.
