Can anyone tell the date from the reverse on this ebay auction?

I'm not going to bid on this auction and am not out to start any controversy. I do remember seeing threads where really good numismatists could tell the date on a lot of morgans just by looking at the reverse. Can anyone here do that, maybe a vammer? I know I can't, but thought it might be interesting if someone here can make out the date of the cc on the back of this roll.

I think this is a roll that was made up to look good.

    Ya think?

With all the scams on eBay, how can anyone even for a second consider this "real". It might be, but so might the tooth fairy.

  • Garbage.

An 1899-O on one end, and a CC on the other end, with a "high proportion of PL and DMPL coins." Give me a break.

Not that I would ever buy something like this, but the seller's feedback, both quantity and quality, appear solid. 2 Neutrals in the last year, no negs. Coins seem to be his primary focus, i.e., not a general merchandise seller.

    From the seller description:

the investor question is whether to sock away the roll as an investment in itself or to open the roll. I personally think its better to sock away the roll since there are very few unopened rolls left and that value will only increase as more get opened.

This way, if you do not open the roll, you see the 1899 in 64 and a CC Morgan in 64 on both ends and no reason for any hostility towards the seller if it remains sealed. The odds in some Vegas casinos might be better than this gamble.

The middle 18 probably contain VF to XF common date with a large helping of 1921 coins.

Very interesting, but seems fishy, as others have said.

Surely those pieces at the ends of the roll would have more toning?

Googling "Carson City State Trust Bank" (with the quotes around it) brought up two hits for me.

    One was that auction.

The other was this one, from a different seller.

The coins in the latter also look bright and untoned.

Maybe I'm wrong to think that the end-of-roll coins should be toned?

Are both suspect in some way? I have no idea.

Good point, I also would think that both end coins would be toned.

  • Seller also refers to this as a "short" roll. Does that mean that it's not 20 coins, but 10?

    It says:

    << <i>SHORT STACK ROLL 10 coins >>

So yes, 10 coins. But I can see where there could be some confusion.

the seller hopes PT Barnum was right and that person sees his auction. Did such a bank ever exist?

    << <i>Did such a bank ever exist? >>

That's exactly why I Googled the name, with quotes around it.

The only two hits were eBay auctions. One being the OP, the other being posted in my previous reply.

    Hm. Interesting.

Now, searching without the quotes, there were some hits that had very similar sounding (but not identical) bank names, so I suppose the bank could have existed, but I didn't go very far with the research.
