Die Trash Strike-Throughs on AGEs

I've been going through my stash of Burnished AGEs that I haven't even put a glass on since I bought them, grading them as I go.

Occasionally, I come across a coin with little bits of either hard white plastic or a dark solid-looking bit of "die trash", so I lightly brush the contaminant off the coin to get a better look.

In 3 or 4 instances now, when I brush the little bit off of the coin, what I get is a shiny little divot, staring up into my eyeball.

Now I know that not every blemish is a contact mark. Even so, there's no denying that the coin isn't flawless when one of these pops up.

It appears that the correct term would then be - a die trash strike-through. Is that accurate? Does anyone else see many of these?

  • I dunno.

I have had gold eagles with grease, cotton thread and also wire though. I consider these all just strike-through errors. I have yet to see one with all those little poc marks like the silver eagles have had the last couple of years.

Hey thanks, Larry. Yeah, they may be errors but don't they count as detractions on the grade, because they look like contact marks?

Poc marks is a good descriptor. These are 2008-Ws.

  • They don't seem to effect the grade on error submissions from what I have seen.I have not received a grade higher then an MS69 on a strike-through submission but I have on a rotated die. It would be nice the for sure.

Argh, I just found a repeater. Different coin, same spot. Die trash.

These are MS-69s. No other marks whatsoever. Was hoping for a 70 or two but I think that's not gonna happen.

I have seen similar stuff on modern made large coins from the mint. Most specifically I have seen quite a bit of it on Ikes. Mostly what I have observed has been a mix of copper, nickle, and hardened grease.

Much like these spots of grease and copper:
