There is hardly any Argentina in Krause!

World Gold Coins.

Half of page 21 and half of page 22.

What is up with that? I wonder if they have an addendum available?

No, but it's very close to Placentia

Krause is very general in nature. Is there something specific that you wish to know?

Krause's Standard Catalog of World Gold Coins usually does a pretty good job of showing all of the various world gold type coins.

But it has omissions. I know that much of the Netherlands section is missing and is available as an addendum.

Now, I see that the country ARGENTINA has only two half-pages devoted to it. And this 5 pesos piece does not seem to be listed at all.
I wonder if that section has also gone missing?

I was just curious about this particular type: What range of years was this type made? Where was it made (if more than one mint is involved)? What are the recorded mintages for each year. Prices are unimportant to me.

    1881-89 and 1896.

Casa de Moneda de la Nación (Argentine State Mint, Buenos Aires).

1881 has the lowest mintage (37,152). The highest mintage is 1887 (1,834,674).

Thanks for the info. The dealer I bought it from said it was 'one of the rarer ones'. He also said that he had just bought it from another dealer on the floor an hour before. Dealer paid $280 for it. I paid $300.

It's sort of chattery, but I think it is a cool coin. Nice and thick. With edge lettering instead of reeds. The edge lettering is so tiny; I can make out equalidad. Now my eyes hurt.

Hard to photograph with my camera lighting the way it is. It doesn't look quite so stark in room lighting.

HEY, you guys are talking about my Motherland!

I lived in Argentina from 1944 until 1959 and loved every minute of it. Of course, never did see a gold coin while I was growing up image

    Adam,

I got this info from Krauses's Spain, Portugal and the New World. It is also listed in Krauses's World Coins 1801-1900.

That gold 5 Pesos is also called an Argentino. Minted from 1881-1896.

You did better than I did. I went to the Santa Clara show Thursday and Friday and left with no coins. BUT I did leave with some valuable learning experiences.

    That one is a pattern.

The only regular issue half argentino is that of 1884, with a tiny mintage of only 421.
