What's involved in submitting coins & Your thoughts on this Bust Quarter?

I am strongly leaning toward joining PCGS for the first time so I can submit coins. I thought I'd pay for $49 for the low level membership and just start out easy, with maybe 3 or 4 coins. What is involved after you pay the membership, do you just print out a form, write in your CC number, put the coins in flips and send them away?

I thought this 1833 quarter might be one of the first coins I submit. What are your thoughts on this coin?

  • I would say an XF, maybe an old cleaning, but could be the lighting source

  • There is a clash right in the middle.
  • I see post mint damage and a genuine holder. But I love the coin and don't know from shine ola. So hopefully the more knowledgeable will weigh in.

  • It is a nice example of B-2 (O over F, common), but it will likely only receive a "genuine" holder at PCGS due to the debris within the shield and some of the letters on the reverse.

C'mon guys, that will definitely slab XF40 or XF45 unless there's damage on the rim that we can't see.

Worth submitting, and nice for the grade. I'll call it totally original.

    Wow. Tough crowd.

I don't know squat about Bust Quarters, but assuming the lumps on the obverse are die rust, it looks like a beautiful, original piece. image

I think they just want me to sell it to them on the cheap image

BTW, the reverse is rotated some 30+ degrees

Those lumps are indeed part of the die. The only "damage" is a rim disturbance at the top of the obverse. The gunk adhering to the reverse is normal for a circ. bust coin that has not been cleaned. My guess is that it has XF45 details and will grade XF40 at PCGS. I could be wrong, but I think he should send it in, especially given that it's a scarcer date and would bring a premium price in a PCGS XF holder.
  • So those lumps of metal that look like solder drippings are "die rust?" And that "tread mark" on her neck is a "clash?" Told ya I didn't know anything.....

And I still love the coin!

Yes, the die rust on the obverse is quite common on the 1833 quarter

I vote for submitting it. Looks like a very nice, original coin. But I should point out that I'm often wrong.image

Nice coin I like the measles on the OBV.

If you just want to grade an occasional coin, you may want to just go through a local dealer who does submissions. Shipping both ways can make single coin grading expensive. --jerry
  • No period after the 25 C. I have the B1 and yours is the B2. I wish i had both. Nice coin looks like a small hit in the neck next to the clash marks, but i think it would have no problem slabbing. I would say XF40 the tallons are strong so perhaps a XF45. The best date to have in the small diameter quarters. We could use another guy on the Early Quarter registry, Nice pickup!

  • Also the process is very easy. Sounds like you got the Jist of the idea. I usually don't do the online version but it may be easier. You can now submit one coin at a time or many. You pay the service on each coin then add them up for the subtotal. I usually pick ecomomy. It takes about 4 weeks. Its about $18 dollars a coin times how many coins your submitting. Be sure to write in your club member # on the form. Than the return shipping which insurance is included if you look on the back of the submission form, $8 dollar handling fee and your set.
